E300TD 1999 Gearbox oil change?

Is there any requirement to change the gearbox oil and filter?
The car has covered 80,000miles and has never had the gearbox oil changed etc.
I cannot find any mention of changing the oil or filter in the servicing manual (genuine MB hard copy)

I do believe in 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it. but any suggestions would be welcome

I believe the gearbox was orginally sealed for life, but the recommendation now seems to be change the oil and filter at 35K miles, it doesnt take long to do if you are a reasonable DIY mechanic.

Dealer told me sealed for life but they change between 40,000 and 60,000 now but not as a matter of course. Only if there's a possibly related problem or the customer asks.

You change your engine oil. You should also change your transmission oil.

Apart from anything else it allows you to sift through the oilpan and see if theres any funny colours or debris in there.
