E300TD - buying wheels / Tyres with the view of using with future E class upgrade

Hi

I have E300TD 1998. It needs new pair of tyres and also I would like to buy second had rims and winter tyres.

However.... I drive about 6k miles per year and not sure how long the existing car will be kept for.

The tyre size is 215 55 R16.

Will the wheels and tyres be compartible with more modern say 2002-2005 E320 CDIs - the type of car I would be getting next?

Any other relevant advice is also welcome!

The W211 E class uses 225/55-16 as standard and thought he wheels will physically fit and have the same offset, the bolt hols and seat radius are different.

I would by W211 wheels and fit them onto the W210 using the special RAD bolts.

Interesting idea.

Is it officially (Mercedes) approved? Will it pass MOT and is it safe?

Would that be classed as modification for insurance purposes?

A modification like that is never going to be approved by MB. However, the wheels will have their own approvals, as will the RAD bolts, so there's no reason for it to be unsafe. Lastly, all you need to do is tell your insurers that you have fitted different (Mercedes) wheels.

Hi!

Are these likely to be suitable?

Also I am quite keen to get winter tyres ASAP. From reading on the internet it seems it might be OK to fit 225 55 R16 tyres on my existing rims that hold 215 55 R15 tyres.

So what would be the views of members on these options:
1. Use existing W210 rims and fit 225 55 R16 tyres with the view of later using the tyres with W211 rims?
2. Fit existing W210 rimsd with 215 55 R16 with transferring later on these tyres to W211 rims instead of 225 tyres?

Undeer both options come spring I would buy W211 rims (with plenty of time to do that) and fit summer tyres onto them.

So I suppose the underlying question is there flexibility of fitting either 225 or 215 to the same rim or not?

Thanks,

Will these ones that are taken from E240 suit E300TD (with RAD bolts) and E320CDI (probably estate) in the future? Are parameters like offsets etc compartible? Also is it OK to fit from E240 to E320 car as E320 probably a bit heavier and much more powerful? Would these be offered as an option on E320CDI?

They are off the Classic version of car and IMHO aren't the most attractive wheel, however they will fit any W210 apart from AMG 55.

It doesn't list the full size of the wheel but they should be 7.5" rim with ET of 41, iirc.

You can find offset details on this website.

That style is listed with two different fitments, 16"x7J ET33 or 16"x7.5J ET42.

7" for CLK, 7.5" for E-class.

sorry Im confused 215 to 225 width no problem but you say your going to put 16 " tyres on 15"rims in diameter ?
Er no that wont work!

Sorry made a typo. In all of the above R is 16. So I am sticking to 16" Radius wheels throughout.

Hi, I bought these ones (Based on part numbers cast on the inside of the wheels and looks) Mercedes alloy wheels | Genuine new 16" Mercedes Yilduz | fits Mercedes E Class Estate S211 | Alloy Wheels Direct Ltd:

16" Mercedes Yilduz
Front & Rear alloy wheels: 16x7.5" ET42
Wheel part number: MER B66474229
Additional alloy part number: A2114014402

I already discussed the concerns over the corrosion on them and established it is not a problem ( http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/whee...y-have-lots-corrosion-hub-face-they-safe.html)
as well as the Brand of winter tyres to put on and decided on Continentals (http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/whee...-55-r16-what-go-performance-rating-brand.html)

I am now back to the choice of tyre width / profile! I originally based on searching forums and even some tyre sellers that offered 225 55 R16 as an option for W210 decided to go for 225 55 R16.

However I then found this one that really concerns me:
http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/wheels-tyres/113847-help-w211-16-ruchas-w210.html
http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/1254941-post5.html

So now I am concerned whether 225 55 R16 will work with my W210. Does anyone here acually (other then the poster in the above two links who had trouble with other alloys as well based on his history of posts) drives W210 with 225 55 R16?

If I have to go for 215 55 R16 rather then my prefferred option of 225 55 R16 will I be able to use 215 55 R16 with S211 safely? I presume I would have to go for the XL version of 215 with load rating of 97 - which in theory should be sufficient for S211 as standard for S211 is 95.

Also should I folk out extra £30 for V rated continentals rather then H? Could it be actually cointerproductive (if V rated means stiffer rubber that does not perform so well on snow / ice for example) ?

Any advice appreciated!
