Hi all
I have a small problem with my 2001 E320cdi under any acceleration the car chucks out black smoke like you would not believe to the point where i have been stopped by the police twice and they have told me if i am seen again with the car smoking they will impound it.

now the car has been to the workshop i have had a new EGR valve fitted new MAF sensor had all the injectors checked and a full service also tried fuel additive but its still the same thick black smoke under acceleration, none on tickover and none when cruising

the car has not lost power and fuel economy is normal and its been code read and showed no faults

any help would be great as i cant afford to put it in a main dealer, and my local garage has run out of ideas
thanks
J

why not speak with a main dealer technical service manager for basic advice, its worth a try

best of luck :)

Inlet manifold flaps bunged up?

You may have had a new EGR valve fitted but did they clean out all the associated plumbing, manifolds. etc properly? Quick blast with some miracle spray and a wipe is not good enough

An old or cruddy air filter will not help either. If it has not been changed recently do so. Not that expensive.

hi yes he said he cleaned it out properly, as for the air filter that was done when it was serviced about 1000 miles ago

got to be blocked injectors or EGR...cant think of anything else... Fairly common on the 320's...

would blocked injectors not cause lack of power or lumpy running/starting ?

not necessarily enough you would notice on a big engine like that...

I don't suppose you're using diesel additive on a regular basis? If you are, then stop using it and see if that makes a difference.

If the boost pressure transducer was over reading , would this not make a difference ? causing the ECU to overfuel significantly on hard acceleration ?
Certainly would get the same symptons on a mech injected diesel if you cheated the fueling control by bleeding off some boost air .

All fuel pumps will be set to a maximum delivery and I would think the ECU has a similar threshold.
It will either be boost pressure being lost so lack of air when accellerating, manifold flaps, jammed or dribbling injectors or blocked cat.
Worn injectors will cause excessive smoke as the spray patern is lost so there is an incomplete burn.

thanks, its booked in for monday to have the boost pressure checked, i will let you know the outcome

Hiya, I had the same problem with mine, and the problem that came up was a faulty diesel pump. The diesel pump was mixing the diesel in the wrong way apparanty. Has fixed the problem now though, but ye it was smoking excesivly...

update, the cars been in again boost pressure has been checked injectors have been tested again and egr valve checked again, everything is working perfect and still she blows, looks like the only thing it can be is the pump and if it is its going the distance i have been without the car for almost 3 weeks now its getting beyond a joke

Manifold.

This thread demonstrates just how dependant mechanics have become on computers. You'd think that such an obvious fault would be easy to detect, after all its only fuel and air.

They're not mechanics any more, they're fitters tbh.

Apologies to any mechanics who work in a dealer who do know what they're doing btw.

At the start of this thread you said that you could not afford to send the car to a main dealer. Hindsight is a wonderful weapon but it might have caused you less aggro and even cost you less money. The worry now must be that if your local guy still can't solve the problem you might end up at the dealership anyhow.

As somebody else has already said, so much on modern cars is computer controlled and needs computer diagnostics to identify and solve problems.
