Hi all - new to all this.
I've got a 2002 E320 CDi with 128000 miles.
Been a great car last 4 years- but has suddenly stopped dropping down
gears on kick down - and does not seem to go over 3000 rpm when in tip manual gear.
Very occasionally - on start off it also does not change gears, or
go into tiptronic - but that disappears when you turn engine off
and start again and changes gears perfectly then.
Is this all serious ? I would like to repair and keep car - but it's
only worth £2000 according to dealers - so I don't want to go to
MB who might charge as much as that.

Also - it's due for an 'A' service now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is that what MB mean - they said they'd put it on diagnostic for a couple of hours ?

Sounds like the symptoms of a faulty 'maf' to me.........do a search on 'maf'

Yes but I don't think it needs to be on for a couple of hours.
I'd take it to a good independent that has a STAR machine. They will be able to diagnose the fault for half the price of MB.

Where are you based? Do you know of a good independent near you?

As Olly, possibly MAF or conductor plate in box.
