Hello All,
About to take delivery of a 2005 E320 cdi. I assume there is a hidden menu somewhere, how is it accessed? Does the 7G tronic gearbox need an oil and filter change every 40k? Are there any know big issues this this model? Finally for now, any good Mercedes specialists in the Hereford/Worcester area?

Cheers for now
John

V6 or straight 6 engine? I'd say yes to the ATF oil change every 40k. V6 engine suffers oil leaks from turbo seals, which drips down onto inlet swirl flap motor. Redesigned seals are available.

Was SBC around till 2007 ish?
A bit of research on that might be useful, although you might be lucky that the unit has been replaced and good for many years again.

A service record could well show when the ATF was last changed. My personal view is 40k miles for the 1st change but a little longer between after that.
A check to see if you're unlucky enough to have a DPF fitted might forewarn that it needs it's legs stretching monthly, the VIN can show that.
What's the mileage? Injectors might need some attention if not done already at around 150k miles +, this could be an expence of £1.6k
Seeing if the oil is dripping onto the swirl motor below could be useful knowledge as it can be remedied before the motor's knernackered, wiping a white cloth below the tubo spigot can show for 'wet' oil rather than muck.
Not overy serious but they are known for the oil cooler in the 'V' to leak at the 'o' rings. Evidence of oil at the bell housing might be a clue.
Early ones have had the rear crankshaft oil seal leak I believe, but I guess that would show oil at the bell housing also.
Glow plugs and controllers are regular problems on the 642. The skinny glow plugs 'can' be a bitch to remove.

I've read the the in line 6 is near bullet proof, but didn't they get phased out in 2004 ish?

120k full merc history up to 88k then indy. A previous MOT check mentioned an oil leak but the last two were clear, assume that might have been the issue highlighted?

loads of issues with om642 engine, if your lucky you wont have any , some are major some are slight.

I bought the same car 8 months and 10000 miles ago and, apart from having the conductor plate changed on the gearbox early on due to sometimes getting stuck in 2nd gear, it has been faultless. 36mpg combined driving and 40+ on a run. The performance is addictive, andI love driving it. Good luck.

as all above plug leaky oil cooler seal and brittle exhaust manifold are possible

A 2005 car is right in the pre/post facelift crossover period. It may or may not have SBC, but being a V6, less likely. Mirrors and headlights are the easily found differences between pre and post facelift. I think there have been main bearing problems on a few V6 engines, but not 100% sure it affected this model.

being a v6 it can still have sbc, me fathers e class has and thats a 2005.

It refers to the sensotronic braking system, the system can be expensive to maintain.
