Looking for a e320 atm and was wondering which of the 2 engines are better? V6 or the straight 6 diesels?

What do you consider "better"?

Straight six is more economical and bullet proof.

V6 is more powerful, revs more freely but is not in the same reliability league.

Id more power but if the engine cant cope, the straight 6 would be my choice.

Annual mileage i cover roughly 4k - 5k at most

Straight 6 :D

Both can obviously be remapped to deliver a lot more power and torque.
The advantage with the later cars is the 7 speed box which is very nice when working well.

At such a low mileage I would be looking at a V8 myself.

V8's are very scarce :/ thats why im looking at the large diesels as they have alot of torque :)

I have a V6 642 in my Vito. Nice engine, but the straight 6 613 will run forever.

I would have thought a 320CDI would soon reel in a 320 petrol.

Would think it would be quicker from the off......But the stuff stinks and i dont seem to be able to fill my truck up without getting smothered in it! or dripping it down the side of the body.....getting it on your hands because the garage gloves are too small and the pumps never seem to be as clean as petrol pumps.....sorry getting carried away but you see what i mean.

Tony.

If you decide for a V6 CDI, then makesure it has either full MB service history or MB specialist/independent service history...This will ensure the correct engine oil is used and gearbox oil and the correct service schedule is carried out. The V6 CDI is a refined engine but still not refined as a petrol engine IMHO. Cold starts are annoying and they take around or less than 10 minutes to warm up, in which you have to bear the loud diesel engine noise :(. Fuel consumption wise around 23-26 mpg in town and 35-40 mpg on a long run but it can be different due to various factors such as driving style etc...

My cars only get used, on long drives, I work in the Motor trade and have been around diesels for long while so dont notice the noise lol.

But i know what you mean.

Think i will just see what comes by at the right price for the right car and go from there. :)

Good to hear. Yes if its purely for long runs then warm up issues and fuel consumption are not major issues and diesel engines are best suited for long runs. Hope you find a good car :)

I have both. The V6 is super smooth with great power delivery. The Il6 is a bit rougher until it warms up but is more economical and feels bombproof. The V6 is an awesome engine far superior to the V6 petrol. Before anyone starts I've got a 320 petrol also.
Go for a well maintained V6 diesel.

I agree, the V6 Diesel is great, it's just that the I6 feels like it will run forever and as we know, some have topped 500,000 miles plus.
No DPF in the I6, better MPG and relatively easy to work on in comparison to the V6. Ultimately, they are usually attached to a cheaper car too!
Wish I'd have hung on to mine. Watch this space.

One thing to remember is that diesel-specific maintenance on an older diesel can mount up, even if you're covering low mileages as you plan to. Things like glow plugs, leaky injectors, etc. Worth bearing these items in mind, as it can dramatically increase the effective maintenance cost.
