e320 cdi w210 killed?

My e320 cdi w210 workhorse had to come home on a tow truck friday night due to gearbox problems.
For a month or so gearbox has been going into limp mode i.e like stuck in 3rd gear or something.
If you turned it off and then on again it was usually ok . But friday it got stuck in like 2nd gear and wouldnt change up and tiptronic didnt work so i pulled over and got towed home and left it on the drive .
Started it up last night and it will go into drive and reverse but it kind of thumps when you select them. Still stuck in 2nd gear

Do you think this is the end of the box ? it was driving perfect till this happened .

I have had a vehicle before that was stuck in one gear permantly and thumped into gear. The fault turned out to be the gearbox ECU. Worth getting it looked at first!

Get it on STAR...could be many things...not necessarily gearbox.

Get it plugged in.

It may just be a faulty electrical plate.

I was thinking it was the plate . How much do the plates cost ? I guess they are non repairable and you can only get them from merc dealers? I have seen on an american website some body changed one of these plates on their drive Is it a hard job ?

Not a job you want to do at home. It needs an expert really.

140£ ish i was expecting 500£ plus .
Car is on the verge of being scrapped so ill get it plugged in at nearest merc specialists and see what he finds.
On the american site where i saw the guy change one it looked simple . But in reality i bet its very messy and fiddley so i dont fancy laying on my back doing that.
Ive only just changed all the ball joints brakes and shocks and springs so it would be a shame to break it up for something small
