My '05 plate E320 Cdi takes about 20 minutes to get to normal operating temperature - I know this isn't a Merc trait as my SL takes about 3 minutes to get to temperature.

Once at temperature it stays there, nothing else untoward - is this normal???

:dk:

Nope - it's almost certainly a stuck thermostat. About £45 and will pay for itself with the saving in fuel....

Your SL is petrol. Your CDI is diesel.

The diesels take a very long time to warm up...this is normal and absolutely nothing to do with the stat.

Try warming your car up on the drive way at idle speed...it will not get to the 88c you require.

No. Twenty minutes is not normal on 211. More like 5.

Looking again though I'm not so sure. Ours always ran colder on the motorway, until replaced.

Have you tried warming it up on the driveway? The type of driving after start up will determine how quickly it warms up.Is yours a I6 or V6?

What he said.

Been there and thermostat simply loses the plot over time. Will still need 8-10 miles to warm up fully though.

10 miles at 30 mph is 20 minutes...the stat is probably fine. He was comparing it to an SL!!

I'd say that's about the same as my C270CDi.

I work from home but sometimes take my wife into work - a 12 mile round trip which takes about 30mins. In colder weather (below 8C) the electric heater booster means there's warm air starting to come through within a mile but the temp gauge is barely moving off its stop by the time we get into town. The car is only starting to feel properly warmed up by the time I get home again.

Right chaps, just out of interest and because I'm a bit sad :) I monitored mine on the way to work this morning:

Ambient temp 12C
Operating temp on gauge (for mine this is one bar above 80C) in 11 minutes, average speed 29mph, distance 5 miles. The 1st two miles of my journey are mostly downhill so the engine is doing much work during this time.

Dunno if that helps! :dk:

just remember that E320 has 15 litres of coolant & 8 litres of oil to warm up !

My daily round trip to work & back is barely 12 -13 miles, it only just about gets to 60 deg on the way to work, poss 80 if I gun it a bit & get the turbo boosting.

I changed the stat, as soon as I bought the car, the old one was mint ( as was the cooling system ! )

shame other parts of the car aren't in such good condition ! :D

I had similar problems till I changed my termostat. Well spend £££ as mine heats up ina avg of 6 miles where before I could drive 30 miles and it was below 80deg. Changed it 2 days ago and I already see diffrence in MPG as well.
