Im doing a twin turbo conversion on my e320c,

Before fitting the kit on, Im totally rebuilding the engine, and gearbox. The diff will be sent to quaife in the hope they can fit a LSD in place.

To further complicate the issue I decided to swap the 4sp autobox for the 5sp autobox.

this is the progress so far.

Engine and transmission being removed from donor car:

Exhaust off

The next task was to remove all the wiring for the 5sp box. For this most of the dash had to come off:

And all for this:

We had hoped the wiring loom for the gearbox in the engine bay was seperate

Upon close inspection this was found NOT to be the case. In fact the transmission cables were part of the inboard wiring harness, as the donor car did not have aircon, it would not be possible just to swap them over. As a result we had to strip the loom right down:

After 2 hours of messing around the loom was seperated

Next step was to remove the rocker cover and strip it down, ill be having it powder coated while its off.

Now ready to remove the pistons:

Well thats it for now, the pistons will be off this evening.

Strewth!!

Good luck, looks like it will be an interesting project!!:D

Great project Akash.
Interesting to see the engine being lifted pics, it looks like it's coming out without cutting the slam panel. I was sure it would but can you confirm?

Nice project, keep us posted.

Just one question, does the 5 speed gearbox have its own ECU, for the 5 gear or something?

Yes it uses a seperate control unit but only for fifth gear 4->5->4

Great project Akash.

Well it will definatly go back in without cutting the panel, but we cheated when taking it out. You basically have to lift leaving a lot of the chain slack at the rear, we mis-judged it by around 3-4 inches.

Excellent !!!!!!!!

VERY interested in the quaife LSD when you have more info.

Fingers crossed they can get one of their existing units to fit, if not the idea is out of the window. A custom job is around £3k.

Pack up a little early today, got the pistons out, going to see a local engineering company tomorrow.

See how it's been blowing by those rings, that's lost power.

Have you got the bottle to run it in the quick thrash method to ensure the rings seat properly next time..??;)

Where the piston is black and brown stained below the oil control ring. That is caused by blowby.

I was planning to replace the rings in anycase, but I didnt think there was anything wrong with them. Guess I was wrong. While on the subject, do MB sell the ring set per cyclinder or are they for a set of 6?

Always replace the rings and hone the bores on any rebuild, they will always be worn and the new honing will allow the new rings to seat properly.

Probably sold per piston set.

Have the conrods got measels..?

Wow, this looks like a project. Looking forward to see how this one turns out, now that's what you call a mod...

I used to have a 300CE 24V with a 5 speed Auto box, I was told that the seperate ECU mabe need re-setting for the 4 5 4 gear.

I have been advised that the seperate ECU can be reset by brigding two of the pins. Does anyone know if this is true.

I had the gearbox rebuilt completey, but the car jumps into 4 5 4.
Before and after the rebuild.

On the motoway, it never wants to go into 5th.

Also I have been advised, if all fails, make a seperate switch for the 5th gear. (not sure if that will work) Any ideas.

Great project :bannana:

If they there is any sign if a wear ridge in the bore you need to remove it or source some rings like Super Apex or Cord, as they have a relief step on the top ring to miss the ridge or you may suffer ring breakage or excessive blowby. It is also a good idea to check the conrods for straightness. Another really worthwhile thing to do is a full balance it makes an amazing difference on big engines with lots of heavy bits flying round :) Its gonna be a great car when its finished, keep posting the updates please
