Dear all,

I’m still a relative newbie (even after owning a W211 packed with gremlins) so please bear with.

I now have a W212 350cdi and my indie MB garage recently told me that they should change the air filters, rather than do them myself, as the car will need to go on the diagnostic to ensure it has the correct fuel/air mix.

Is there any truth in this at all? And will I bugger anything up if I diy it?

Yes they are right , they need to tell the car it has new filters . You could always change them yourself before the service , and they could update when they are servicing the car ?

I am aware that this is the recommended procedure, ie resetting adaptations on STAR and is listed by MB on the change procedure. However, it has been suggested by some that the car will 'relearn' over a period of time, the argument being that the car 'learns' as the filters age/block.

If a reasonably good filter is changed early, would the car differentiate between a new filter being fitted?

I don't know the answer but it has been discussed on here previously.

When did Mercedes cars need to have a Star reset when an air filter was changed? Should my handbook say this is necessary? Mine is a 2014 EClass 220cdi

The maf values change as the filters get clogged up for optimum performance and economy. You can manually tell the ecu to reset values to begin relearning with new filters, or change the filters and let the car reteach itself .

I linked the WIS document of OM642 somewhere where it is stated... I don't know does it applies OM651 of yours.

I've read a quote of yours from 2018 saying values will eventually reset to correct values over time.

People need not worry about having star and xentry etc.

Yes, it does it... I think 90% of merc owners do not know/do reset...

Hi,
I have a mate with a Vito van, 350cdi, it developed a fault, he checked the air filter(s) well and truly blocked and dirty, he threw it away until he could get new one. After a fast trip to Coventry it went into limp mode, continued with his journey and by the end of it the EML was now on.
I plugged it in cleared all the faults fitted a new Air Filter(s), but would still go into limp mode or EML would come on possibly both.
Cant remember the exact code it showed but I reset the adaptations for the Air flow cleared everything and has been ok ever since.
So it might not be deemed necessary by Mercedes but I think under the right scenario it might become a requirement.

Sorry, I thought the previous comment was alluding to a diy reset.

It is! Depends who is DIYing... 🤓 I couldn't live with my MBs without SDS... 🤩
I think some of expensive end 'universal' readers like carsoft may have capability for doing it....

I'll take a look at my mb2 v2 today. God knows what menu it may be in though . 😁😁
