Hello All,

I hope someone may be able to shed some light on an issue that has occurred on my 2011 350 CDI Coupe.

Unfortunately the car had a small oil leak that turned out to be from the oil cooler, this was change and the car was collect on Saturday 21st, 3 days later driving the car and come to a roundabout and the car felt like it was running out of diesel EML came on and the car cut out, Managed to get the car started and parked on a side road, fortunately .

My mechanic (who changed the oil cooler) has collected the car and has investigated the issue and the error is flagging as low fuel pressure and the car wont start, It turns over fine but as if it has no fuel?

Has anyone experienced this or can she any light on the issue.

Cheers

Return to the garage that did the cooler , they haven’t tightened something correctly on the fuel side

Well it looks like the op is using a local mechanic,he has changed the oil cooler and the car is not leaking oil,I am trying to think just what he could have touched that was on the fuel side of the car, nothing springs to mind,it's a bit weird.

Thanks for the reply's, The car has been returned to the mechanic that replaced the oil cooler.

So after investigation he has come back to me and said that the fuel coming through was not a constant flow but spitting out, He has advised that he put £20 worth of diesel in and the car started fine and the fuel was flowing correctly. However, when the car broke down it had over a quarter of a tank in there.

He is suggesting a possible sender unit?

I do find it strange that in the two years of ownership not a single issue with the car apart from this oil leak, Now this has happened 3 days after they have dismantled the engine to replace the cooler.

If it helps the car is only on 50k and has full mercedes service history.

Cheers

Did he mention he had to disturb any of the fuel system to get the oil cooler replaced? Sounds like a coincident it has given trouble at the same time. Surely it would have happened straight after the repair not three days later. Could be a failing sender unit, you'll know once you get down to 1/4 of a tank again.

@91dm you have to take the best part of the engine apart to do the job, so there's a lot to put back together that could go wrong.

OP: I didn't realise that the 2011 models required the oil cooler seals changed, I thought that was only on early 2009 231bhp models?

They did change material of sealing at some point but structure is still same so it is possible (though rare) that the seal will still damage...

Mines a 2012 W204, it had the old type seals which blew and dumped oil all over my garage floor after the dpf regen got locked in its cycle...

I wonder if the coupes still had that issue for some reason, but not the saloons?

Hi guys

sorry for the late reply been very busy with work. So where we are at with the car I’ve taken the car back as the is no obvious issue so I’m gonna run the car back to a quarter of a tank and see if the issue occurs again.

However, there is now another potential issue. Saturday just gone the battery had died thought nothing of it jump the car and then took it for a good run. Battery has been fine until I leave work yesterday and the the car is dead again. So I jump it as before starts up after a few try’s. Get home approx 3 miles from work. Turn the car off and locked it. Then I’ve noticed the fan has come on but is starting then stopping then starting and stopping.

I do understand that things go wrong but is this all just coincidence?

anyway any ideas what my new fault maybe?

cheers.

Something is keeping car awake and draining battery... At ignition on, Low voltage cause fan going at full speed. WHat reading you are getting from battey pole voltage? How much car is charging?

Up to 2012 models before it was fixed buddy

To be honest I haven’t got the equipment to measure the battery but my mechanic is going to measure it in the morning.

I think it doesn't occur on the 265bhp models?

If you check this couple, it's a 2011 but still uses the 231bhp engine like my 2009 saloon for some reason. The coupes and saloons didn't always switch/use the exact same engines at the same time.

I also suspect MB also used their old stock up of seals and engines and there is an element of 'pot luck' involved...

Mines a late 2012 saloon 265bhp that had the old seals - they blew at around 80k.
Merc new about the problem for a long time before my car was built, cost me £2300 so far..

So had the car scanned again and it is throwing Low voltage warnings, Mechanic suggest that the battery needs changing which i am OK with however it seems that the fan is turning it self on and off once the car has been turned off and locked this will continue to run until the battery dies.

Could a low battery trigger this fan on and off, or could there be another underlining issue.

Thanks for all your help so far guys.

I have a Nov/Dec 2011 E350 265bhp. EPC shows A6421880180 (orange seals) spec'ed originally, then recommended replacement of A6421880480 (purple seals). No date associated with change.

Back to the potential battery issue, AMEST, on top of the battery terminals, if it's a Merc battery from factory install it will usually have two numbers stamped on the top of each battery terminal.
In your case, it might be something like "11" and "30", which would coincide with 2011, and week 30 from 2011 (or whatever number you actually have. As it's 2011, one of those numbers should be an "11".

If this is the case, you can safely conclude that you are on a 10 year old battery. If that is the case, then you should replace.
If you need to replace the battery, these threads might help.

Also some suggestion that Varta make the Halfords batteries.
Varta F21 has same spec as Halfords 115AGM, which is £142

Hi all.
Just an update, the battery has been changed however the issue of the fan starting up of an evening is still happening.
It has been booked in with an individual Mercedes specialist but not until the 5th of jan.

Does any one know what fuse I can pull to stop the fan powering up?
