booked my car into an independent on the Wirral (MB Motorcare - recommended on here) for a B service - done 44k. Reasonable estimate of £480, compares to main dealer of about £800
They initially said it also needed a gearbox service - costing £220.

Now they say gearbox service is not required - as this is due at 77k - good news that I'll save the money but slightly knocked my confidence they don't fully know what they're doing.
Anyone able to throw any light on this.
    Thanks in advance.

If you have the same 7g+ box as my c class it's due at 5 years or x mileage. Personally I wouldn't let it knock your confidence in the garage, over the years Mercedes have messed around with the service intervals so much it must be hard to keep track.

Probably originally quoted service interval for 7g box which is 4 years or about 37k

^ as above, and if it’s MD Motorcare (Ellesmere Port), Dave knows what he’s doing all right, no question

As above, I wouldnt let it knock your confidence. As a person who prices up Merc services all day every day, it is IMPOSSIBLE to keep up to date with every single car and their service schedule. They swap and change so much.

I would say look on the other side of the coin. Take confidence from the fact that they double checked it and told you it didnt need it rather than just going ahead, doing it, and charging for it anyway.

As above have said, they did you a favour by saving you money --- the 7g+ gearbox just has an ATF & filter change after 5 years or 125,000Km (78,000 miles). It will be in your Owners Manual.
It does require a different spec ATF though --- ATF134FE.

The previous 7g box required an ATF change at 37,000 miles -- different ATF too.

I think you might find, with it being a 350 and a 2015 it will have the 9 speed box. It was introduced for the 6 cylinders in late 2014 when they moved from AMG Sport to AMG Line.

My E350 9G Coupe book says 77,000 Mls change ATF. Etc. Yesterday had new switch for Manual up paddle ordered under warranty. See my engine thread "My 9g box Drama".

I'm really pleased that I went on the Mercedes service plan at £28 per month as I have the same car as you and it looks like its a bit cheaper going through the main dealer.
