Hello All,
I'm looking to buy an A207 generation E400 Convertible in the coming months. First time buying a benz and a convertible (although would buy a pan roof coupe if it was in my ideal spec).

A couple of questions I was hoping some experts could advise on:

- Are there any common problems reported with the E400 engine or coupe/convertible in general that are worth paying particular attention to when viewing a model?

- A little confused over whether the 207 generation has the 3.5 or 3.0 fitted - from what I've read both were fitted in different years and the 3.5 is lower stressed/lower turbo pressure so perhaps a safer buy for future longevity. Does anyone know a sure fire way to identify which engine and would the 3.0 and 3.5 have a different gearbox - is there a preferred gearbox?

- Finally, is anyone looking to sell an E400 convertible in blue with tan leather and the memory seat package? ;) There's a beautiful E350D Cabriolet close to me in that spec but I really want to get a V6 petrol out my system before they go extinct

I have the a 3.0 E400 Convertible, lovely engine, powerful and fairly economical, no issues so far.
good to know you’re happy, thanks. Do you know if yours has the 3.5 or 3.0 and 7 or 9 speed? Is yours garaged or out in the elements all year? I do t have a garage which concerns me slightly for the fabric hood/seals longevity

And I have the 3.5 engine, with as you said, the wick turned down on the Twin turbos (else it would bother an AMG 43)
VIN decoder is the only way to be certain as many dealers won't know what they have.
It was dropped into run out of the facelift before the new model (A208?) was launched. Mine is a 2017 car

I have the 7g + box - I think the updated model (18 reg on) had the 9g
Had the coupe in brilliant blue with black leather for nearly 9 months now coming from a 12 reg e350 coupe.

Nothing of note so far on either car (but service and MOT due early March)......
It does go well, yet I did have over 44mpg out of it over 250 miles in the summer

Had Saab and a CLK vert beforehand sat outside in all weather's
A good clean and a coat of Fabsil along with some rubber sealant treatment / Gummi Pledge to keep tight seals is all you'll need.

The A207/C207 was based on the W204 (C-Class Saloon), and the replacement is the A238/C238 that is a new design (i.e. no longer based on the C-Class floorpan).

3.0 as I said and 7g , garaged all year but a friend has a 2004 CLK55 not garaged in the Highlands and his roof is perfect.

@Glasgow90,

This link will tell you all you need to know about the development of the 3.0 and 3.5 M276 V6 E400 engine.

I owned a 3.0 C207 E400 for 3 years and it was an excellent trouble free car. The M276 is a super smooth quiet engine. I've driven both the 3.0 and 3.5 versions and couldn't tell them apart. It's interesting to note that Mercedes did not continue with the 3.5 engine in the C207 E Coupe replacement.

Thanks for the input, all. Today I bought a 2015 E400 convertible - navy blue, blue hood and grey leather. Very well specced and low mileage for the age. It’s down in Wiltshire and I’m in Glasgow so not collecting for another couple of weeks but very much looking forward to it. Will miss my Alfa which has been a fantastic car but have had it for 5 years so ready for something new

As part of the deal the garage is redoing the alloys to plain silver rather than the current two tone. I prefer the more traditional look of the plain silver.
