I think the Alloys are from the W140, I'm not wholly sure they are correct, although they were available in 95. The W124 AMG's always look better on 3 pieces split rims rather than the later 2 piece items.

It was a Japanese market car only, they really did get the pick of the crop when it came to AMG motors.

So it must have some aftermarket stuff to rate the output power to 312bhp? Didnt the normal E420's give figures around 275bhp?

It will be tuned by AMG, I have no reason to disbelieve the claimed output as AMG usually did heads, cams and exhaust. so a reasonable power increase for a normally aspirated engined with those changes would be 15% or so....

The 560's of that era put out 300bhp as standard ...

I think the 420's put out 230 ish bhp , but i could be wrong.

The 430 engine of the w210 and w208 put out 276 bhp as standard , 306 in C43 form ...

I think the standard 400E put out 272 bhp from the 4.2 litre 32 valve engine found also in the SL's and W140's of the day.

I thought Japan was right hand drive?

It's something to do with status, LHD cars being more expensive, I believe.

This car was discussed a little while ago, too :)

Also, I understand the Japanese did get 400E/E420 cars with AMG tuning. I've seen one's advertised with Stage 1, 2 and 3 tuning, although I don't know what's done to the cars with each tuning "stage".

From MB's Technical data passenger cars (Oct. 1993):

M119.975
279 bhp at 5700 rpm, 400 Nm torque at 3800 rpm

AMG's tuning on this car involved high lift cams, head porting etc. Increase in bhp would have been circa 50 bhp, so the 312 stacks up.

The car has been tuned by AMG Japan. They usually got bits no other country got !

Having said that, it's not a Hammer and it's not even as fast as a 500E which has the ultra sexy looks with it's mega wide fenders....you could throw a Turbo Technics kit on a standard 500E, add AMG bodykit, all for circa 3k, plus a good base 300E is circa 2k....all in for 5k with RHD.

You can have the same car pushing out 310bhp ! 335bhp if it's an M104 300e !!! For 5k !

I dont understand, why do the japs have more choice over AMG and tuning specs compared to europe where these cars are originate from?!

So what makes AMG in japan more special compared to europe on these W124's?

How come other markets didn't get this variant I have never heard of.

I would guess it was done for those people who wanted a W124 with a V8, but without the E500's price tag.
400E/E420s had less engineering, I believe, so the price was less.

I know for sure the 400E/E420 was available in Japan and America, but I'm not sure if it was available anywhere else

Ive seen a few of the E420 in the states, but never heard of an AMG version of it. Wonder what the insurance would be like on one of these!

Since the car is essentially a factory upgrade, as it is AMG Japan, it will not receive much of a loading. If the modifications are factory, then insurers do not load extra.

The only loading will really be the left hand drive difference.

I get fully comp cover on my 500E's for circa 275 gbp. The e420 has less powerful and less attractive car to steal....gotta be cheaper.

cheers

Darren,

These insurance quotes may very well be Classic Car insurance quotes. My two classic porsches, fully comp, are insured like that for about £300, with a limited mileage policy of 6000 miles.

A collector like Talbir might even have a "fleet discount"; if he hasn't, he should! ;)

best regards,

Bert
