E400d 2020 4matic (W213)
Hi all,

My E400d 4MATIC W213 says it needs an extra 1L of oil, but I don't know what would have been put in it and I'm concerned about which oil to add.

The manual says 229.52 and I can't get ahold of a genuine MB 229.52 can of oil, so I need to add 1L before a long journey on Monday.

Searches seem to say that it's 5W-30 but are there any variants that I need to look out for to be able to add 1L and not worry about adding a different oil?

Any recommendations for the E400d 4MATIC W213?

Thanks in advance.

I would add any-brand 229.52 oil, 5w-30. But I would add half litre only, then see if it still complains.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, will do, I'll see what I can pick up today/tomorrow from a nearby Halfords/garage and add the 0.5L and keep my eye on it. Have 600 mile trip to do on Monday so want to get some added before then.

Thanks again.

I had a similar issue. I spoke to my local mb dealer and the master tech said the E400d uses around 1k of oil per 1k miles so its normal.

I keep 1l bottle in my boot in case it needs topped up.

I first topped up at 2500 miles after a service and will need to top up again soon at 8kmiles. Car has only done 18k miles.

I find it i constantly drive hard and revv over 3k rpm then it uses more oil. I think this is when the second turbo kicks in(could be wrong, not that techy).

I boughr 6l of MB oil from MB from ebay for 40 quid.

Hi @nas2021 thanks for your post and reply here. Good to connect with another E400d owner.

I'm (kind of) glad to hear of your reply as it gives me some peace of mind that this seems more normal than a potential issue with my vehicle or its engine.

I'm due in for a service in a couple of weeks and would like some written confirmation that this is normal. I have already asked them twice about this (when I've been in for more oil) but they have so far hesitated in saying it is normal for this vehicle.

It still seems a lot of oil to use, I'm at 3 litres in 15,000 miles so far and it needs more again now... Again, if it's deemed normal, no problem, I'll just top up as required, but there's certainly no way it's going to make it between services without numerous topups!

Thanks.

I was talking to a guy who was a chauffeur specialist ground transportation and he told me that the new straight six diesels use a lot of oil. He said all the years he'd driven V6 diesel S Class never had to top them up but regular occurrence with the latest straight six.

TBH, i don't think MB will give that in writing. I have spoken to 2 MB dealers. My local one in Edinburgh and MB in portsmouth and both told me the same thing. I will be around 3l as well when I go for my next service. I think it's not considered an issue as an E400d is quite rare in comparison to the 220 and 350 engines.

As I mentioned before if I hammer it everywhere then it eats oil like theres no tomorrow however since my last top up few thousand miles ago I have been driving less harshly and the oil hasn't moved as much and I managed to get more miles. I just done it as an experiment to see but obviously want to enjoy the car so not as bothered about the engine oil consumption as I know there isn't any leaks or issues. Enjoy thr car as I think people realise how quick the 400 engine is until you fly past them lol

Are you 100% sure there's no leak?
Honestly? No. I've looked and cannot see anything, but I haven't taken any of the bottom of the floor guard thing (don't know what it's called!), MB can do that part.

Interesting, thanks for the info. As I mention, I'm fine if it's normal, I'm just currently concerned.

No, I don't think so either but so far I've had them write notes when I've gone in for top-ups, so at least its noted somewhere. Again, if it's normal I'll stop worrying about it.

Agreed, as long as I know there's nothing wrong with it...

Yep, it's pretty quick! I had the E350d before this one and I loved that one, but the E400d is a different beast. I quite like it when you get the idiots on the motorway stuck up your backside and then floor it! Not that I do that recently since the nice policeman sent me a picture of me driving the car in the post :-(

Aw man, thats not too good. Hopefully didnt impact you too much. With the air suspension driving at some fast speeds makes you feel like you are cruising along at 70 lol.

So the car was in for a service a couple weeks ago and I insisted they take a look at the oil usage.

They said it was perfectly normal and actually did put it in writing in the service notes (expected oil usage over miles), so I'm fine with that...

Great glad you got it sorted
