E420 estate '96 - one cat has broken ceramics - my mechanic has removed the bits - I am told it costs a fortune to replace. Any ideas? Will it fail the next MOT with one CAT only in place? Will it do any harm running like this?

That is a V8 and you may have 4 cats. if only two are removed it should be ok for mot.
See piccy first two pipes are the cat looks like you may have only 2 my car has got the 4 as said.
Look on e bay for a cat to get an idea of price iirc was £2225 for one side of mine.
