Hello everyone, I've been getting the typical juddering on acceleration that alot of people have experienced with the w211. I took it to my local independant merc specialist and they said it has got the old valeo radiator and that has caused the fluids to mix so I will need a new radiator, torque convertor and a new gearbox which would cost around 4k. Does that sound about right?

Cheers.

yes there is a problem with glycol getting from the coolant into the atf through the return atf cooler lines. it will give the symptoms of juddering and very harsh gear changes. By changing all these items then you are guaranteed to solve the problem but in some experiences just a radiator is required and then flush the atf through about 3 times until it comes through the right colour, red, then you can reset adaptions and drive it for so long allowing the gearbox to reset and relarn its tolerances. although this is a timely job it will work out much cheaper than a new box and torque converter. hope this has helped

I suggested to change the radiator and flush the system first to see if it cures the problem but they said they cant garanty that the problem will go away and if it doesnt go away after that then ill need to replace the radiator again with the torque convertor and gearbox. By the way the car is a 52 plate.

Not another Valeo radiator victim, sorry to hear about it, I thought the V8s didn't have a valeo rad. Has you car got a full MB service history? or a warranty? MB may give you some goodwill but it won't be easy. Plenty of stuff on here about valeo, this is a thread I remember well.

Once rad is changed i cant see why it would need another one along with a new gearbox, a rad is a rad fullstop.

I would defo try new rad first as said and prob get in done somehwere else as they may just do the rad and not fllush it properly so you will have to go back.

I got it confirmed by them that it is the defective valeo radiator thats on the car. I do have a third party warranty with the car so ill try them first but incase they dont accept the claim does 4k sound ok for the repair or can it be fixed for less?

Water in the Tranny (722.6)is bad news for the Brass Bushing on the clutch spindle... if your Tranny has the Brass Bushing which was later updated to a Needle Bearing, the wear will all the rollers to drop out of the roller bearing and destroy the Planetary gear!! See the link below:

Transmission Advice Needed - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

If your warranty/insurance will allow it... take apart the Tranny and inspect.

$4K sounds about right for both Radiator and Tranny rebuild on this side of the Pond!!!

Good luck.. :)
