after owning my e500 for a couple of months i was hoping to unleash a bit more noise from the v8, so after a phonecall to the very helpful eldin at EMP i booked in for the sec cat and resonator delete with X-Pipe replacement. This did make a noticeable difference but still not enough from the fairly docile v8. So another trip to EMP to sort out the back end of the exhaust, and after a week of having no silencers (big mistake) they fitted some smaller Powerflow rear silencers. Really happy with the noise now, a real deep grumble without the chavvy rasp that i had with no silencers! hopefullly lowering links and maybe some new wheels in not too distant future. Thanks for reading, apologies for the rubbish video quality and will hopefully get some pics of the exhaust work over the weekend. Cheers, Rob

Hi, I see I am starting up an old thread, but I am interested in doing the same thing to my S212 E500 and was wondering what the sound was like at motorway speeds? I do plenty of motorway miles and want to avoid droning noises....

^ Don't touch the back boxes if you want to avoid droning. If you thinking of removing secondary cats and resonator and fitting a x-pipe I can tell you it works very well with a V8 W211 but no idea on a W212.

Thanks! Though I'm not sure if I have a resonator - there's a big box on the middle of the exhaust where the gases from the two sides mix, but it sounds a bit empty, it might just be an empty box. I was worried that if I x-pipe it, I wouldn't get much more sound. Mind you, I guess removing the cats must make a difference. At the end of the day I'd love the deep sound of the E63, so maybe I just need to track down a pair of E63 back boxes.

Good luck finding W212 E 63 boxes. I doubt W211 ones will fit but I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

That box you mention is the resonator and putting an unrestricted x-pipe there makes a lot of difference.
Be aware removing the secondary cats is officially an MOT fail but haven't heard of any one failed for it before. As long as emissions are passed there is no problem and the primary cats do that job just fine.

Thanks - food for thought!

I have seen a few E63 exhausts on eBay in Germany, but haven't looked into how possible it is to ship from there (or whether LHD parts fit RHD cars).

I hadn't thought about W211 parts: you're probably right that they may not fit but I may try to find out as it'd be much easier to get something.

I'll definitely also look into secondary cat and resonator delete - but I get mixed messages from browsing US forums (where there are lots of W212 E500 owners). Some say the resonator delete doesn't do much to the sound, others say removing it introduces a drone. I'm not sure what the function of the resonator vs rear boxes is on the W212 and whether the overall design changed for the W212? Lots more for me to think about....
