Hi, I went to test drive a 2019 E53 Cabrio today, but was hugely disappointed by the exhaust sound. Having in my time driven a CLS 43 that popped and crackled nicely and a GLC 63 that obviously sounded amazing but the 53 was just well quiet. Even from a cold start it was so quiet. The dealer said it was because it only had agreed basic exhaust but even so! Does the performance exhaust sound better? Maybe I should wait to find one with one?

Does the 53 have a performance exhaust?
I've yet to hear any V6 Mercedes that can compete with a Mercedes V8. The 43 estate I heard close up resembled a BMW. Not nice at all.
Get an E63 while you still can. There won't be a huge difference in the running costs.

It’s an option this one didn’t have. Agree wholeheartedly re the 63, but it’s finding one!!

Rog the difference in running is huge between them. Discs and pads on the 53 - £500. E63 £1500 plus. Big servicing cost difference too. Insurance is much cheaper on the 53.
Looked at both as you can get a 63 for just a little bit more but it does cost a lot more to run.

Armytrix, Akrapovic make exhausts for it which transform its sound. The valves will be open fully in sport and sport plus mode on the original one.
It’s never going to sound like the V8s which nobody can beat

Just to update this, I bought the car. When warm it’s very quiet in startup, I can only presume that the garage warmed the car in anticipation of me going, I was expecting a roarty cold start hence the disappointment. I can report that is sound flipping epic, Miles better than the 2018 M3 I used to have. Absolutes love it. 👍🏻

Pop it in sports + with the performance exhaust it sounds nice

He doesn't have the performance exhaust
To be honest, now I’ve had it a week, bearing in mind I use it for work going to and from customers, the performance exhaust would be too much, it’s perfect standard. Again comparing to my M3 that was too loud.

Too much?! Blimey, the switchable exhaust was one of the key reasons I bought the car I did - these cars need to be heard 😀
