we went up to Lincoln this weekend (via Lutterworth/Stanford Hall for a VW show) to pick up a new puppy

460 miles round trip, mostly motorway/dual carriageway at 70-75 mph with two adults, 1 greyhound, 2 Ford Granada electric front seats (for half the journey) and a puppy (also for half the journey)

14.7 gallons of fuel (BP Ultimate Unleaded) = 31.3 mpg

That must be one of those rather swift E55 'Ecovans' that you have....;)

It makes a real difference when you do a reasonable journey in decent traffic conditions.

average speed of the traffic was interesting. On the way up, I was varying the cruise setting between 70 and 75 on the motorway (M25 and M1) and very few cars were going quicker.

Once we got on to the A46 which is now peppered with average speed cameras, although the limit was 70 for the most part everybody was travelling at a steady 65 - presumably frightened of getting caught.

Pretty much the same on the way back down. The A1 was moving at a steady 70, the A14 with it's average speed cameras dropped to about 65 and it wasn't until we got on the M11/M25 that we got back up to the low seventies :)

As for 'driving like a Granny', we left RAF Crampton at 2.30 and were back in Bexhill (225 miles) at 6.30 including a stop for a coffee and to let the dogs stretch their legs so we averaged about 60 mph for the whole journey

It's often the ase that a high performance car will deliver good economy on a cruise, due to the need for good aerodynamics and engine efficiency required to produce the requisit performance.

When cruising an E55 is using the same amount of power as an E200.

A friend of mine has a 2001 Fiesta 1.3 (gutted for him) and he drives to stansted and back everyday from Southend, he gets about 35mpg out of that. Doing the same sort of drive I'd get 29mpg out of an A8 4.2 and about the same as him out of a Passat 1.8T.

He's ordered an Octavia vRS off me and he was worried that he would get low 20s to the gallon given that it's a bigger engine, I reckon he will probably get the same out the Octavia.

Thats true but when you compare it to what each respective engine has in reserve (or how much of its power its actually using) then the E55 using is probably using alot less power of its maximum.

Its a bit like that top gear episode where the toyota prius was flooring it round the track and the 4.0 litre M3 was tasked with keeping up with it, and the M3 had 25 mpg while the prius had 14mpg average over 10 laps (or something like that).

As an appreciator of such cars, with all respect & no offence intended, I don't really understand why drivers of high powered cars (which by definition are uneconomical) post mediocre economy figures which most of us get with normal or fast driving

Surely this is not really the point of such cars?

These cars cost more in environmental terms to produce, get through tyres more quickly, use more fuel, etc, etc

Have the cars & enjoy them for the right reasons; I don't think efficiency & ecological reasons can be one of them! :)

I've just done Rochester to Oulton Park and back in an 07 Vivaro van with the caravan on the back and got 25.9mpg:crazy: (2ltr diesel)

Another point (mentioned in OP) is that it is on BP ultimate, which gives better performance & more mpg, so factoring this in, the economy is relatively poorer. Most normal cars are run on standard 95 octane; running them on 98RON(if the cars ecu can adapt for it) will give even higher mpg figures, meaning more of a difference in economy relative to the AMGs

Did you see the Top Gear were the BMW M3 chased the hard driven Toyota Prius and got better MPG??

Smatt, no offence taken but I think to many people it is relevant or at least of some interest :)

Whenever I talk to anybody about the car I can pretty much guarantee they will ask three questions

How fast is it? How many miles to the gallon? and how much to insure it?

How long do the rear tyres last;);)
