Evening all,

RE : E55 1998

1.Finally decided to work out what could be up with the brakes tonight. The brakes are fine on very light application. medium application of brakes and the car and wheel shakes as if abs is engaged. Seems to get worse the hotter the brakes are (or the faster you are braking from i.e. 100) . When I heavy brake it goes away, and the car stops no shaking or drama.

Brake assist issue or just warped brakes ?

2.Has anyone had a Mercedes Geometry check, do they check all settings ? Good experience ? Any recomended dealerships ?

3.My car has a blue tint to all the windows and passenger mirror, is it supposed to had a blue tint on the drivers mirror?

4.(GRAV888 ?) Has anyone changed the middle silencer on the exhaust for straight through pipes, if so have you got the details ?

Thanks for reading and drive safe

Cheers

1. Probably friction material stuck to the brake disks which causes uneven grab. Try left foot braking really hard with your right foot on the boards for a few hundred yards. If this alleviates the problem then remove and clean the disks with coarse emery cloth or a sharpening stone.
Alternatively it could be rusty disks or warped, but that is less likely than you might think as they rarely warp.

2. They will check all the settings but whether they adjust them is another thing. A decent 4 wheel alignment specialist will do the job a lot cheaper.

3. No. The drivers mirror is LCD auto tinting. If it has a black plastic rim around the glass, that is.

4. Some members have removed the centre box.

Many thanks, point 1 could be the case as at low speed there is a bit of grab. Maybe working from home tomorrow was a good idea :)

Well shop around on point 2

3. Also passenger mirror has to be adjusted manually after it has done an auto dip in reverse, common ?

4. Any details people as I think this mod would be nice before Le mans ?

Thanks again, I owe you a pint.

This is the easy bit, Err cut the box out and clamp a bit of pipe in..

The Lamda sensor and ECU will sort out the fuelling.

Now your talking, may think about removing a few more bits to get some flames :) (My mates cerbera does this)

Back to the pipes, I would do what you suggest but it's not that straight a route, need the odd bend otherwise my AMG end will be at a strange angle...Someone must make them as standard. Would save ian at W124 lots of hassle when fitting.

DM, checked the disks viusually and they looked fine when Mitcheldever had the front wheels off to balance. No sign of pad material, assuming I would be able to see the pad material.

Any suggestings on the best way to tell if disk is warped, spin it I suppose with wheel off. Will this show up ?

Spin the wheel with a screwdriver clamped against the caliper.

You won't really see any deposit but hetere will be a different friction for the pads.
