"An average Joe" can't afford to keep or insure that kind of a car, and those who have the cash would rather buy the brand-new E63 or W211 AMG.

That's why old AMGs go for cheap. It actually applies to all old performance cars.

To be honest, most people who buy a £3k AMG will probably run it on a low budget - they needn't cost fortunes to maintain - only really the AMG specific parts that cost lots, otherwise it's a W210 V8.

For £3k it's a lot of car.

If you don't need good fuel economy and are sensible with insurance it can be quite a performance bargain

I've actually seen this one in the flesh. My mate was interested in buying it but backed out due to insurance / running costs. It's a pretty nice example, just the beginnings of the usual rust in silly places, although it doesn't show up in the pics. For £3k it seems to be an absolute steal.
