Who wants to drive about in a 35k toyota? <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/baaa.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':baa:'>

Er nobody.

I think my comment got side tracked. I used the Lexus as an example of a car where you get lots of toys as standard, as opposed to having to add them. I was not comparing the two marques.

My Boss has an LS400 as a daily driver and an SL for the weekend (Sir)

He loves them both - he says the Lexus is the best car hes ever had - and hes had a few nice cars

But in nearly 3 years and 80k miles it has only ever had regular servicing - Its never needed a repair -and its still like new.
He admits its totally ugly - very bland - but the perfect driving tool coz you cant see what it looks like from the drivers seat <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
I suppose if your not trying to make a statement  - then you dont care what it looks like

But he still has a HUGE grin when he drives the SL - and he wants a new one of them too!

I bought an old SL because I couldnt afford a well specced new MB - and I've always loved ragtops! This means that I have all the looks, all the toys and its a sound investment as well. SL's dont depreciate as fast as most other cars !

Sorry Graham my fault.
I take your point but surely it's all about &quot;Status and Quality&quot; as well as spec.
When I first had a New merc it was a 190E,company lease, and MB were anxious to get into the Lease market. It was bog standard and even the radio was an extra!! But it was a Merc, not the Ford or Vauxhall that was on offer.
Since then I have bought my own and moved up to what I want from the spec and price. Yes you could argue the toys are extra, but some of them are gimmicks anyway.
I'm happy with the Avantgarde spec as it covers most of what I want. The 6 disc CD player is something else in the New E class, have a look and see what I mean.
