E55k exhaust mod question

Definitely just less restrictive back boxes as I and others have said, CLS or C63 as Alps suggested if you want a bit more. You'd be surprised at the difference as the E55 is seriously strangled in that department.

Fairly sure youtube has several comparison clips.

As said already, probably the best mod would be rear boxes. Either c63 or cls. (Both are good) i heard two E55 With c63 boxes at Trax, & they were excellent. I have kleemann headers, primary cats gone, & we removed resonator with straight pipes ourselves, so retained secondary cats. My sound is deeper with resonator delete. However i like my car louder, so next step will be either gutting my back boxes, or c63 boxes replacements. Get to the next event to hear as many cars ad you can. Trax made my decision for me.

Ive done all the exhaust mods at some point to my E55.
From open up the back boxes, x-pipe, shorty headers, race cats, de cat, long tube headers and C63 back boxes.
You can hear different vids on my thread in members gallery at different stages.

If i was to do it all again for performance alone and some added noise i would just do 'shorty' headers. No messing with Cats to upset the MOT testers and quality is good.
For a nicer sound which suits the e55 better the C63 or CLS back boxes is definitely the way forward.
Any thing further on just depends what budget you want to spend as you pay for what you get.

Would SL55 back boxes work as well as the CLS's? I have a friend with a 'quiet' E55 and he wants more noise, but I know of a set of rear silencers from an SL55 that are gathering dust.

I would echo what MatB has said above.

Answer for nickjonesn4 - for performance only and no noise go for PLM shorty headers. I have to say I don't think I could really notice any increase in noise when I had them fitted. There may be a slight increase but...... I couldn't really detect it. Performance gains are pretty good and you could expect probably 30bhp / lbft. One of the best mods I've done:thumb:

Agree with what others have said about c63 rear boxes or alternatively cls55 / 63 rear boxes.

My first exhaust mod was the typical secondary cat and resonator delete and x-pipe install which pretty much everyone goes for. I quickly had this removed and reverted back to stock. To my ears it didn't increase the sound in a way I liked!! Ok it made it louder, but only in a deeper sport of way and also DID introduce some drone just at the typical motorway cruising speed which I hated!! I didn't like the deeper sound either as I really wanted a harder edged tone. I also felt it had a negative effect on performance as I lost some back pressure which caused some lack of response low down.

I then fitted c63 rear boxes which have given a much better sound to my ears:thumb: I would say the c63 boxes give a slightly higher pitched mopre exotic sounding exhaust note if that makes sense and give a nice hard edged sound under WOT.

Currently the rest of my exhaust is stock so I still have all cats and resonator in place and I like the balance of sound and performance it gives. It seems a very fine balance, but retaining back pressure seems to keep that low down instant grunt I want out of my car (ie more torque). A more free flowing system may give a bit more power at the top end, but at a sacrifice of torque. Each to their own, but I know what I prefer:D

I think the SL55 rear boxes are smaller so may need a fair amount of modification to fit on an E55. I could be wrong though.

I was just about to try a mod on my original E55 rear boxes when a set of c63 boxes came up so I went for them instead. I sort of wish I had given the mod a go now as I think it would have been very interesting to find out. The mod I had in mind hadn't been done before, but then a guy in the U.S. did it and seemed very pleased with the results:thumb:
