E55K with Brabus bits

About 10 years ago I sold my old C43 and left the three pointed star (I know, I've sinned). Been through a few other cars and also left the UK for CH, but now I'm finally back at the wheel of one.

Picked this up back in May, the car was originally sold in Germany where it also had a trip to Bottrop to give it a bit more oomph before being imported here. It now has 530horses and 775Nm thanks to a Brabus K8 engine tweak, as well as the mandatory wheels and a speedo that reads a bit higher than the original AMG one. Its rather quick off the line, if I can find traction:D
The rest of the car is pretty standard E55 stuff. Seems to have been very well cared for by the previous owners and now has around 70,000 miles.

WOW what a machine, My ideal car! apart from being LHD, Very nice!! Are those Brabus wheels staggered?
 
Whilst I love to see any pics of Brabus speced cars, and totally appreciate their rarity, but that rear diffuser in this instance is a killer for me, looks like Brabus took a hacksaw to it,:cool: this said good to see another of their cars out there;)

They're staggered, 2 piece split rims.

As for the £7 Nurburgring picture, I've been there enough times that I don't fancy paying for them. If I get a really nice shot I will but otherwise I'll just be stingy:D


And in slightly less good news, the car died on me today. First time in my life I've had to call the breakdown recovery services, despite having tempted faith many times with 90's Italian stuff:(

Went to drop off a mate at the airport and the car just died as I was sat in a queue of traffic entering the airport. I thought it was due to heat soak of some sort as it was a rather warm day here, but seems a bit more problematic. The car just conked out and wouldn't restart.
Pushed it down the narrow 1-way quick drop off to the irritation of all others trying to catch their flight:D, then called for recovery.
Breakdown chap quickly figured out that no fuel was getting to the engine by squirting some quick start stuff in the intake fanimold, which got the engine running a few seconds then it died.
He checked the wiring to the fuel pump, no voltage. He checked all the fuses and all the relays (this car isn't short of them and some are really well hidden), but they all seem to be good. He then wired the fuel pump straight to the battery, that got it going, so pump isn't faulty. Then he made a wire to bypass the fuel pump relay, but that wasn't it. Finally he made a wire and ran it from the cigarette lighter to the fuel pump and the car fired up. I'm rather impressed with his detective work and epic bodge to get it running:D
Since I'm about 1.5hrs from home, he then gave me a few choices. Either try driving it back home with his bodge, drop it off at a local garage or drop it off at their place locally and they will trailer it back to a garage near me. Decided to have it trailered back, and it can go to my local Merc garage.
Hopefully its nothing too expensive, sounds like a harness problem to me but recovery man couldn't investigate further as he doesn't have a wiring diagram.

Well the issue seems to be with the fuel pump.
Apparently it's drawing too much current (garage measured 25amps, I don't know what it's meant to do), and this blew the fuse, burnt the relay and melted the plastic relay holder thing because of heat.

Has anyone heard of similar failures on these pumps?
I'm wondering how it could draw too much current, maybe something is shorting inside it.

And to add insult to injury, I have a bright pink smart courtesy car:doh:
 
That's a helluvalot of current - I'd expect half that. Didn't you say the recovery guy checked all the fuses and relays and all was good? What melted the plastic and burnt the relay and fuse?

I thought he did check each one, I was with him and he had been through many, but obviously not all. To get to that one, the garage had to remove the lining from the boot and go somewhere under the back seat, close to where the pump is.

Its the heat from all the current that burned the relay and melted the plastic. The fuel pump fuse is 30amps so needs huge amounts of current to blow it.

New fuel pump will be here next week, should have the car back Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully it really is the fuel pump and not something else causing it.
I also need to find a good MB specialist close by to look after it. Will see how it goes with the main dealer, they've been friendly and helpful so far, although expensive. Can't really judge yet how good they are at doing work.
