E63 - How noisy is it?!

I always hear my neighbour start his DMS tuned F10 BMW M5, and think it's a very nice sound indeed. Kind of an angry bark followed by purposeful burble. It must be said I don't hear him start their Skoda Octavia estate or new Land Rover Discovery (but it's a Land Rover so it's probably broken down anyway).

I'd be more than happy to hear an AMG V8 start up. Depends if your neighbour likes cars. If he does, you'll be fine.

I personally love the sound when my neighbour starts his XKR of his XFR. But having said that, he doesn't seem to have too many early starts. And I'm fan of V8's anyway. And I like the fellah.

I'm not so keen on the noise my neighbour makes when she fires up her 56-plate diesel Mondeo at 6.30 am. It's incredibly loud and booming. She sometimes then lets it idle on the drive for ages (thanks....) and then, as the icing on the cake, proceeds to rag it down to the end of the cul de cac with the valves bouncing off the bonnet. It's probably only doing 4,000 rpm but sounds like armageddon.

But back to your question the only way to be sure is to listen to one going through it's cold start routine. If you can hear it clearly from behind a closed door then you have your answer.

I did a fair few 5am starts in my "green" car also was in the garage so it sounded like an aircraft.. I'd warned my neighbours the night before I'd be waking them all up.... I'm sure your 220 would be as loud if its a diesel....

Can't comment on the 63, but my 55 with x pipe has a certain something to it on a cold start. :D

I live on a farm, the nearest and only neighbour is 40m up a wooded hill.

He has noted when I have an early start or two, but he only mentions it because he has a real soft spot for it firing up. ;) Apparently one of the daughters would like to know why he can't have a car like that haha!

All that aside, if a 63 barks and growls like a decat x piped 55 on cold start and you live in an urban area, you probably need like minded neighbours or a 10am-3pm working day. Or maybe a long ****d downhill you can roll until you're a mile away..... ;)

I have a stock E63 5.5 and a 5.5 M113 SLK with the secondary cats removed, but no X-pipe. They both fire up with a 'whump' and quite a loud exhaust on cold starting, but soon settle to a more reasonable burble (until you use the loud pedal more than a touch, obviously).

Although I always do what I can to be respectful and considerate with my neighbours, I have also come to learn that people’s attitudes aren’t the same these days.
Thankfully, my neighbours (left and right of me) are fine and no bother.

However, the ones directly opposite me seem to show no consideration a lot of the time and always have a habit of parking directly opposite my drive on the road (even when they have space on their drive, which boggles the mind) which prevents me having easy access to my own drive. Infuriates me.
I won’t go into details but I have, over the last couple of years, politely knocked on the door numerous times to ask them to move their car so I can get on/ off my own drive.
You’d have thought they’d have acknowledged the issue and parked more sensibly. But no, they still do it to this day.

So, on the subject of noise, these neighbours are the ones that would brunt the most noise from my start ups.

I have a double garage which faces them, so noise, I’m sure, is magnified.

During this time of year, I let the AMG tick over in the garage but don’t/ can’t do anything to mute the noise.

For the purposes of ensuring all moisture is expelled from the exhaust system, I also wind the engine up to 3000-4000 rpm once it’s up to temp.

Winding it up, and then kicking it up. Just a couple of times during the idling process.

F@&! ‘em.

In fact, I’ll be letting it tick over later today.

if you are parking on your drive and always in the same place you could put something to absorb the noise a bit behind the car, maybe a strip of fake grass along the bottom of your garage door so it doesn't reflect the sound straight out into the road? I'm sure Google can suggest something better than fake grass but you get my point.

Don't have an E63 but I find my 2017 C63 quite gentlemanly on start up, it seems to settle quickly.

I previously had an M4 and this was way more annoying on cold start as it revved higher for longer and the sound wasn't as nice when it did that.

Supply the neighbours with earplugs & enjoy the car ;)

Blimey our clk55 makes such a noise on cold start up so I can’t imagine what the 6:3 sounds like,,lol,,
,, great though and settles quickly,,,

I think, let the neighbours enjoy it. they'd appreciate it a lot more than the fart cannons that my neighbours drive. one is a Mitsubishi evo with an obnoxious modded exhaust . the guy opposite does circuit driving, so he switches on his racing fart cannon on from time to time. a guy a few doors down has a terribly noisy caterham with what seems like an exhaust pipe borrowed out of the noisiest motorcycle ever. sadly the c63 w204 is too far down the road and there is an old AMG right at the end of the road...

if my neighbour had an e63, I'd bring out the popcorn every time they started their car and come out to enjoy the glorious sound at every opportunity ! it is pure unadulterated porn for the ears ...

Just stop worrying and buy the bloody thing.

Life is too short

To be honest, I can’t see anyone having an issue with the sound of a fine V8 starting up, whatever the marque (Apart from a small % of people that purely don’t have an ounce of appreciation of cars, which is fair enough).

I love to hear them and always give a respecting nod whenever I hear one.
There’s a guy just down the road from me that has an old Ford hotrod.
Sounds lovely burbling up the road.
It’s proper loud but I love it.

It’s the revving the nuts off an engine that I’m sure we’ll all agree annoys everyone. Even at car meets.

The voice of a V8 is what it is.
It’s just doing what it was designed to do. You can’t start a V8, or drive one, without it sounding like one, whether lower down the Rev range or high.

V8’s will at some point be totally abolished and “outlawed”.

So enjoy them, indeed.

There is proper boy racer somewhere near me, don’t know where but somewhere.
Now and again I hear/ see him.
Your stereotypical boyracer’s car, can’t remember what, but a low-level hatchback of some description.
God knows what he’s done to his exhaust but it is the most noisy, painful thing to listen to.

I do feel for HIS neighbours.

Or those selfish individuals who object to being woken at 5am....

I live in a quiet part of the world and in a close and the last thing I want to do is become the talk of the residential committee (which I am part of, to make it worse!). Again, I do not want this to be a deciding factor, but it would put my mid to rest if I knew that maybe there was a 'quiet' setting that I could leave enabled in the evening for the next morning? I have regular weekend trips I make starting at 5AM.

The OP is showing a lot of consideration for others. He lives in a quiet neighbourhood and recognises that early an early morning racket is going to seriously pee people off.

They are loud, more bass than the camera picks up, but not an unpleasant noise.

Hi all,

I'm thinking of upgrading from my C220 and jumping up to an E63 and I'm slightly worried about the engine noise, specifically on start up and I do not want to upset the neighbours too much... Though that alone will not stop me from doing it ;-)

Genuine question, is there anything to tone the startup noise down at all? Some cars I've been looking at have a 'quiet mode' for this particular reason and I was wondering if such thing existed on the E63? It's a >2014 I'd be looking at, in fact I have my eye on two 2015 models right now.

To be clear, I want the noise! That's one of the points of getting the car in the first place, just wondering if there is a 'tame' setting that could be used for early mornings?

Thanks in advance.
Don’t wrry about it, the engine sounds lovely even if it’s a 5am start up, a little rev may boost their wake up call :)

As Phil state above they're very loud on start up, especially for the first 20 - 30 seconds, after which they quieten down almost to the point of subdued.

I used to start mine and throw it straight into gear which has the effect of lowering the revs slightly to make it bearable, though mine didn't have a lot going for it in the way of silencers or cats...

I suspect that, if it would cause issues, that it would be possible to get the cold start mapped out of it.

Nope, I tried to get this done and nobody I spoke to could remove the higher idle cold start
