In terms of traction, 4wd isn't as useful in show as you might think, unless you have locking differentials in the centre and both axles. Otherwise, the all the power will be directed to the wheel that is spinning and you will still be stuck. My old Impreza you generally have very good traction, but in very slippery conditions one of the front wheels would spin due to the front axle having an open differential.

That car was excellent for hilarious for carpark donuts though.

More importantly, in terms of cornering and braking grip, 4wd makes very little difference and if you have no grip, you just have no grip!
