E63 Wagon purchase, few questions...

2014 E63S Wagon
Gents,

I am seriously looking at a used 2014 E63 Wagon purchase. Having just sold my W204 PP C63 Coupe I am aware that Merc don't always stay on top of the various updates issued. For example, my C63 was missing a transmission software update despite buying from a good main Merc dealer.

Do you guys know whether there have been any updates issued since early 2014? Dealers are not usually clued up on this so I'd like to be informed before going in to finalise a purchase.

Anything else I should be aware of generally? Car cosmetically needs some TLC for a three-year-old car, the roof seals on the pan roof are green but look recoverable.

Appreciate your help and look forward to becoming a member of the E63 club :bannana:

Cheers,
Stuart

There's been at least two TCU software updates since 2014, and various others including for the ventilation system. I'd be inclined to ask them to check and apply all updates before you collect it on the basis that it will save them time later ;)

Some early facelift cars suffered from wind noise from the grille / grille surround joint. This will normally be audible from around 50mph and upwards.

Hi mate what's the fix for the grill noise?

Hi mate what's the fix for the grill noise?
It's caused by the gap between chrome grille frame and bumper being excessive along the top edge. The fix is to remove the front bumper and glue the chrome frame in position. The TIPS document detailing the fix is TG-G188.20-P-056745, and mine was done under warranty.

Or you could turn the radio up ;)

Thanks Phil, knew there would be a handful of updates! Collect the car Sunday so I will get on it ASAP in case they need doing.

Will find out about the wind noise no doubt on the drive back to Cambridge!

Thanks again

How could I find out if the TCU updates and the ventilation system changes were done on my car? Just a case of going to the dealer and asking them to check the system?

When I bought the car, I asked them to check if the maps were up-to-date under the 3 year free navigation map upgrades program and when they looked, the car was on a factory 2014 navigation map, so they updated to latest before I picked it up. So with the fact that the nav maps had never been done, I doubt if the other updates were done.. or are they linked in one big update session when the maps were done? sorry don't know how software updating works with the workshop.

Our grill noise was fixed under warranty too.

In terms of updates. When I took it in for it's second service at Merc Edinburgh, the very nice chap at the desk told me that there was a transmission update and the guys in the workshop will do it while it's in. It just made it smoother on the warm up to be honest.

Basically, yes. I suspect (but Alfie or Richard could confirm) that some updates fall into the "optional" category and only get done if a fault is reported. FWIW, the ventilation system update was done in an effort to resolve an ongoing issue with the Start/Stop going into a sulk periodically on my car as the a/c was often being logged as inhibiting it.

Regarding the TCU updates, the last one I had done around mid-2016 speeded up response to the paddles and made the downshift blips even bigger and roartier. It was worth it just for the noise!

Is the noise similar to a squeaking noise? (Sorry to interrupt op)

It's a sort of high pitched twittering noise, and very difficult to determine where it's coming from when you're in the car. Easiest way to determine if it's the grille is to tape over the grille surround / bumper joint (from headlamp to headlamp, over the top of the grille) with masking tape and then drive it. If the noise disappears, that's it.

Mine wouldn't do it if the wind was blowing in a particular direction in relation to the car's path, nor when it was raining (honestly!).

I've asked the question, let's see what they come back with! If they say they don't need doing I will be asking for proof of when they were performed - wish me luck!

The mid-2016 TCU update sounds like my favourite kind of update

Updates were confirmed missing and most recent now applied. Confirmed with Xentry report... thanks again chaps.

Pick up the beast on Sunday so will ensure I intro myself properly then.

My car did (and still does) this too - but in a quite specific speed range (50-60 mph). I found the best solution was to drive faster :)

Is it possible to get a report from xentry about the revisions applied to a particular car?

Sure although too early for me to DM by the looks of things. If you have a creative way to share contact details securely let me know...

I would also like to view the report please :)

Meet you on AMG private lounge? They allow PMs almost immediately.
