We have a store on eBay for our business with over 10,000 feedback. There really is a surprisingly low volume of idiots by percentage of transactions. However when an idiot does crop up they are generally monumentally annoying.
Scammers like the OP's target non business sellers with low feedbacks and little selling history in the hope they can part you from your goods without payment.
I was once told years ago, "You can't scam an honest man", all these scams rely on some part of the transaction taking place outside of eBay or outside of eBay's rules.
