I've noticed on 2 recent members cars postings (Bloodmoon and Andy K) that they both have an economy "swingometer" below the oil pressure/temp gauge on the LHD of the dash.

Having a later type 124 I don't have this and was curious as to why it was removed (I assume it was not an optional fit).

As an aside to this - I'm considering replacing my dash and if so - If I replaced it with an earlier-type dash - how easy would it be to wire the 'swingometer'?

This is what I currently have: Kinkys dash

All the BMW's I have had, also had the Economy gauge. I think I am right in thinking it works via a vacuum tube to the inlet manifold so would be easy to fit one. You can buy them as a seperate gauge to stick on the dash, I once fitted one to an Escort.

I think both BMW and MB stopped doing it because it was a bit gimmicky, obviously the newer models can tell you very accurately through the computer.

Aha - Jimmy - the very man .... who will be getting a phone call from me tomorrow!

yeah - I had a swingometer on the beemer too - and as you say the later models all have it computerised - looks like I'm in limbo inbetween.

I might have to replace my dash due to a temp gauge problem. The engine is OK (pressure tested), the sensor has been replaced (and fitted the right way round). Purslows reckoned it might be the dash meter causing the problem.

For reference - the temp will go up to 130+ (basically as far as the needle will physically go) - and then simply bounce down to 98 then up to 130+, then down to 80, etc, etc ....

I had one of those mpg gauges on my last car (and it wasn't a BMW!) and thought it was totally useless, much prefer the trip computer in this car.

I know some trip computers have a current mpg which goes up and down constantly not just the average that mine has. Guess that would give you the best of both worlds.

with a temp guage like that kinky - you don't need a swingometer :)

he he - never thought of that.

Nice one!
