Mercedes E220 W124 1995
My 1995 E220 W124 stopped working back in November. My wife parked it on the drive then when we tried to restart it the next day, the starter motor turned ok but the engine wouldn't engage at all.
We got it down to our local garage who performed numerous checks, diagnostics and changed the crank sensor etc but still couldn't get it going. I then got another local garage with more sophisticated diagnostics to take a look but they also couldn't find the issue and concluded that it must be the ECU that had gone, which would be 400 quid plus 2nd hand and up to 2K new, so was a technical write off.
I, therefore, called the RAC to collect it and drop it fre back at my house to get on eBay and selll off parts etc.
When the RAC man turned up, I just told him that I had left it over night, returned to it today and it was completely dead. So he went through the usual motions of a dead battery by sticking his jump leads on the car. At first the alarm squealed for a few seconds and then faded to nothing once the jump leads were removed again. He then re- atached them and tried the car and (step back in amazement) the car started up fine.

After a couple of months use, the same thing has happened and the car will not start. I have detached the battery to try the above again but no joy so far

Now - could it be that because i had left the car to completely drain of any power; it had reset the ECU to default and it's fine again OR is it just a freak occurence and the car could fail again any time going forward??
Any help / experience of similar happenings are much appreciated.
Many Thanks
Mike

It couild be somthing simple like a fuel pump relay sticking or an OVP issue.

Not sure on your W124, but the 1988 'F' reg we had from new many years ago had an aftermarket alarm system that was fitted by the Merc dealer in those days at point of sale, if your car has a non Merc alarm system, I would get an auto electrician to completely remove the alarm/immobiliser. They tend to cause problems after some years.

Just a thought..

Jon.

Sounds like the alarm could be at fault?

Seconded it- they normally cut off the ECU and fuel pump. Result =engine turns over but won't start. On a UK car of that age the alarm was a dealer retrofit so no 2 are exactly the same. A good auto electrician/alarm installer should be able to check it out for you. They were often made by Scorpion.
