Took the egr valve off yesterday, no issues or codes just some preventative maintanance.

the soot coating was a little thick and sticky, so i hit it with some cleaner and took my time going over it several times. Picking up a new seal washer for it from merc tomorrow with a few other things, another job ticked off the list.

Soaked mine in mr muscle oven cleaner , 10 mins was as shiny as vadars helmet .

Good job, didn't look too bad, what sort of mileage ?

just over 100k i got it at a little over 86k, there was not much in the way of service documents when i got it, I traded my clk220cdi in for it. Always loved the shape and the room inside, mine has the iridium grey metallic colour that shifts slightly from a brown to a grey colour, buckskin interior. Really enjoy driving it, so now we have some nice weather I am going through the car checking things over making sure all is good.

Looking good at 100k I'd say.
Worth a clean annually and to check the actuator is moving freely.
Although something simple like Torque and a £4 BT sender would give warning of it seizing.

I have got tourqe and a bt obd, there were no codes relating to it but i was looking over a few threads and prevention maintanance going on. So i decided it was an easy job to do sand might as well check it and clean if necessary. I just got my camshaft position sensor as that came up on my obd so i will replace htat this weekend. While i was in the merc dealer i asked for a booking next week to plug the star in and get a proper diagnostic report, was told that unless they were going to service it as well they may not. I replied they did a star printout on my last merc there before service and this was to have the same as it was booked before covid started. Gotta wait for them to call me tuesday now. Failing that I will need to fins someone in south wales or bristol way that can plug a star system in and gove me a full diagnostic printout, if anyone can reccomend someone let me know.

Hi @unclebuck, where are you on South Wales? Give Stuttgart (Home) in Pontypridd a ring. They’re very good. I’m not 100% sure they have Star but they’ve diagnosed various things for me in the past. Worth a call.

Thanks I am considering them, be nice to get a star printout from the dealership though, I have spent enough money with them over the years its the least they could do ;)

My thoughts are that you can watch live data and see the EGR opening / closing. Torque seems to measure closed as 5%.
What can be done with Torque is to compare live the ECU request of the EGR and the actual, that might well indicate a lazy EGR that's due a clean.
In the past I've freed an EGR by repeatedly treating the shaft with penetrating fluid (it rotated on that one) and working in the vice until free moving again.

Ah got it thanks for the heads up on that. any advice or info is always greatly appreciated.

Had my egr out yesterday for a clean, how free moving was yours? Mine will move out but its quite stiff and takes quite a bit of pressure to move.

Is yours the rotating type?
I've had one of those moving very easily.
The type photo'd above will move w/o much effort. Just more difficult as you need a blade from behind.

I clean mine yearly , I never knew you could check for movement .

As well as the egr on the om642 , this front pipe is also worth a clean up at 100k .it’s next to the glow plug module

No not the rotating type. I put a screwdriver behind it but it moves freely but its a heck of a push which makes me think its bot working correct. Im trying to track down an issue with the throttle power not being linear and running a little rough.

It was the rotating type but should work for that type too.
I put it in a vice and allowed plusgas to run down the shaft overnight.
Working that type outward and spraying should do it.
But in truth if it's sticky then I wouldn't expect it to return freely.

Thanks for that, before i lash out on a new one which according to MB are all on back order for w212 2009 onwards until end of August I'll soak mine overnight. Thanks for the help.

How’d you get to this - isn’t it a real pain with the fan and bumper in place on an E-class? Lots of room on an ML etc
On my E320cdi it was a case of loosening the long silver pipe that runs across the engine to the turbo (the one with the green seal) and the black plastic pipe below that one on the front of the engine . I did the green o ring replacement as part of this job .
The silver egr pipe thingy was 2-3 small bolts at one then a case of pulling the pipe out forwards.
It was fiddly but easy enough .
I found my initial info from YouTube
