Sl350
Hi
I have a 2006 SL350 that seems to have an issue with the EIS.

When I start the car I get the roll bar , SRS lights come on I also noticed a clicking sound behind my head and the radio and wipers stop working.

If I wiggle the key the warning lights go out and everything works for a while then the same warning lights come back on. This mainly happens in hot weather when the cabin is hot !

I've check the connections to the EIS and seems to be fine. Not sure if this is a common problem but it driving me mad. This happens on both keys.

Any advice would be appreciated

Ken

Yes, its common. I must have replaced a dozen for this fault. For some weird reason the 350 seems to suffer most. My test is to thump the dash adjacent with the heel of my hand. Can often make the fault come and go at will

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
Yes if I smack the underside of the dashboard that can cure the problem until I start the car again.
Do you think a specialist EIS repairer is the way to go ?
Thanks

I’ve always fitted a brand new unit from Mercedes. I own a garage though, and guarantee everything we do. Repairing can be fraught with trouble, and my reputation is everything to me. Sure, a repair might be a viable option if you diy. It’s dead easy to remove and refit if you have a small hand.

Oh I am so happy! I have had this on my sl350 for two years with identical symptoms and the wiggiling the key "solution ". On mine when the roll bar and srs light are on and the clickiing is going the wipers wont work either which is obviously dangerous as the fault is totally ramndom. It can go three months behaving perfectly , then start for no aparent reason. Any idea what a new fitted replacement cost would be?

I had a new EIS fitted to my W220 recently and it cost £645 all in. Fixed all my weird problems (srs errors, wipers not working, airbag light not going out etc). This was at an Indie and not a main dealer.

My EIS was not faulty but I just wanted to put the correct EIS (part number) back into the car. I noted one of the previous owners got the original EIS replaced (who knows what happened in the past).

A EIS specialist copied my old EIS over to a used EIS (correct part number), plugged it in and working with no problems. All was done via post, so could not drive the car for a few days. The specialist did send me back both EIS, so now I have a EIS as a back up unit (not sure if the old one would work, but I am playing it safe and not plugging the old unit back in).

Can't remember exactly how much I paid... £100 I think.

OK, had the EIS replaced on the SL by my indie and so far so good with my identical symptoms.(see above) Wont celebrate just yet as it usd to go months sometimes perfectly normally, so I think I will give it the all clear after 3 months. about £600 plus half hour fitting and testing
