Electric fan and temp gauge problem

Hi Folks,
Can anyone help solve my problem.
When i switch the ignition on the radiator fan kicks in and the temperature gauge needle goes into the red,thats before i even start the engine,sometimes it goes into limp mode but not always,sometimes it blows warm air out but not very warm,this seem to have happened one day on a long run,and as been a problem since.
Hope someone out there can help.
