Hi, I am hoping someone might point me in the right direction. I own a C220 CDI SPORT ESTATE W202 AUTO and its a great car but recently when I start the car the display shows no gear position. I can move the gear selector, but will move to drive and back to reverse and thats how far it goes unless i turn the ignition off and i can move it back to park.If I do this a few times then eventually the display shows P and i can move it to D and drive off. It seems to be getting worse and have been told it could be the electronic plate?

It could be, but could also be the battery is losing charge when standing. Check the battery voltage.

Could be a faulty selector unit, the lack of gear info in the display would make me suspect that.

My friend had this fault with his 208 CLK just the other day.

Get it to a good indi with STAR and have the codes read.

An independent specialist MB garage, who have use of a proper STAR diagnosis machine for reading error codes and coding equipment.

The part for my friend's car was £374 + VAT, I think he was just pleased to get his car working again. I would be tempted (if I had the time) to take a look inside and see what was wrong with it.

Fitting is relatively straightforward, but I understand that they need coding to the car via STAR.

Ok,thanks for the advice. Just a thought but does it have to be a star machine or would other diagnostics machines be ok?

As it's gearbox related it probably needs to be Star.

Just remembering something. There was an issue with a microswitch in the selector unit causing lack of shifts.

Has to be STAR as the selector module needs coding.

No point messing about, just get it to an indi with STAR for diagnosis :)

Right, thankyou. Would the electronic plate that had been suggested to me be a bigger job if it was at fault?

Electronic plate is cheaper (~£150 ish), but it's all speculative if it's not needed.

I'll guess more at the selector unit being faulty. Get it in STAR and let us know how you get on :thumb:

It needs to be a Star. Other diagnostic devices can read the fault codes which are common to all OBD compliant cars (mostly engine codes), but car makers add on their own codes for other systems in the car, such as heating and ventilation, and the more expensive readers can read some of these.

What Star (and other manufacturer's own systems) does is talk to the car as well as read all the systems. It configures standard parts to specific models, and can even enable options which weren't ordered from new, but are nevertheless resident in the car's software, just waiting to be activated ;)

My W210 had the selector fail.
Did exactly the same as yours.
    would only move between N & D.
Cost about £375 fot the unit and about the same again in fitting.
The gearbox had to be dropped a little to attach.
Had mine done at a local Indy.

Take it here. You'll get a first class job at a fair price, with no danger of being ripped off.
