Hi All, new member and first post here so grateful for any experienced answered.
I picked my 2014 CLA45 yesterday and had much fun driving back (sports mode already feels addictive). After a stop to fuel and afternoon of driving, my engine management light suddenly appeared. Now I will arrange either return to garage or Mercedes dealer to plug in to find out what the potential issue is but hoping someone may suggest checking for obvious things.
I did fuel up with BP Ultimate (97 Ron) where as cap suggests 98. I did recheck the fuel cap was locked in correctly (some old residues of fuel marks) as I read this is common for triggering the EML.
Any suggestions/guidances is welcomed, cheers Dan.

A code read should point out why.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If you have full MB service history you could try and see if Mobilo would come out and diagnose for you? It’s a bit like breakdown assistance which is renewed each time the car is serviced by MB. Not sure if they would class just the EML as a breakdown etc, or if it wasn’t running properly then it could be okay. Might be worth checking though :)

I would probably speak to the supplying dealer anyway though so that they can arrange the necessary action, I’m sure they will want to resolve this quickly.

Def needs code (s) read as already pointed out.

If car was serviced by MB within last 12 months then you can call MB Assist to come out and they will read cOde either by MB Tech or RAC.

Edit: Will beat me to it...👍

Thank you. I wasn’t aware of that service. Yes the vehicle has full MB service history.
Will message dealer (None Mercedes) now and follow up call tomorrow as light still on today. See how they want to progress. Have 6 months warranty.

Cheers. Grabbed the number off site. Appreciate your reply.

The standard procedure is to connect the car to STAR diagnostic computer, scan for faults and make a note of all faults - both 'histoic' (or 'stored') and 'current' (or 'present ').

Then the faults are erased, and the car is taken to a test drive then rescanned to see if the faults come-up again.

Quite often the fault was a one-off, and won't come back. If it does come back, it will need to be investigated further. STAR actually offers the technician a structured diagnostic process to follow.

Also, EML is generally flagged-up for faults that can affect emissions, and the car may also have other faults logged that are not emissions-related, so a full STAR scan is a good idea in any event.

Forgive my ignorance- is STAR the Mercedes diagnostic? Dealer and possible specialist have this equipment?

Yes. STAR is the official Mercedes diagnostic computer. All dealers and all reputable independent Mercedes specialists will have it.

Generic garages tend to use multi-brand scanners, such as Snap-On or Delphi or Launch, supporting several car marques. These are OK for most issues but some more-complex faults can only be diagnosed with a proper STAR kit.

If you are into DIY car maintenance, you can buy a reasonably-priced entry-level scanner, such as iCarsoft or Carly, which are quite comprehensive for the price.

Unfortunately they won't if the car is still running OK - EML alone is classed as a 'warning' rather than a 'stop', and doesn't merit roadside assistance.

Cheers for information really appreciated.

A £25 Code reader from Amazon will read your cars (and others) higher level codes and can delete them if you think it’s a false positive. After my car was in the body shop for a week the first motorway run though up the EML. My cheapo code reader said the code related to emissions. I searched the web and it was likely to be a disagreement between sensors. So cleared the code, the light went out and never came back.

Welcome aboard, you say the EML is showing does the car still run ok,just sometimes you get a EML come up and it is just nothing,it was wiped out never to appear again, but tink you should take it back to the dealer you bought it from, and make sure you give it a good run after thay fix it to make certain it does not come back

Cheers all for replies and welcomes. Have the car visiting an aftermarket garage who has STAR software so will know for sure tomorrow.
