I notice now everytime I go to switch off the pc, I get a message ' program not responding' ,above it, it says ' sprtcmd.exe'. When I search for this, 2 files come up. One is a Windows PF file and the other is a Dell help one. What is going wrong? I am on Windows XP. Thanks in anticipation.

It's a support tool internet connection issues, not really needed.
Do Start->Run type msconfig then look at the startup tab, find it and uncheck it, this will stop it starting (so it won't be a problem shutting down).

Normally my first step when setting up a new PC is to remove all this unnecessary stuff.

Hardest question ever- and I'm not joking.
It all depends. You could use HIJACKTHIS (tool) and past the log here so we can tell you what is not needed :)

    Cheers

Thanks Folks. I can check with you that it is ok to delete SPRTCMD.EXE which is in a Windows Prefetch folder ? I ran the Hijackthis program but am none the wiser.
