Hi Guy's I Think we have a problem with the diesel shut off valve on the high pressure diesel pump which cut's off the fuel when you switch the engine off, sometimes the car will not start if left for a while it then starts, it will then run okay for two or three weeks with no problems then it happens again. I have been told that it could be the shut off valve sticking which is connected to the high pressure diesel pump, If I was to change this valve would I have any problems bleeding it when trying to restart the engine.

About 5000 miles ago I had a problem with the fuel pipes sucking in air, I have changed all the link line to the injectors and fuel pump etc. I had to take the radiator off to change the pipes on the fuel pump and it self bled after a few turns of the engine and it started okay would this be the same if I ordered a new cut off valve and changed that. I would appreciate any advice. Paul P

hi paul, did you get a solution to this problem. my new to me 2000 e 320 cdi has started doing this also. won't start no matter how long it's cranked for. leave it an hour or so and it's as if nothing's wrong. it seems to be fuel starvation so your cut off valve would seem a good place to start. other than that the car smokes black on hard accelerration, knocks like someone hammering in a nail at tickover, does 40mpg and is in all other ways the perfect car. it's not due a 'b' service for 8700 miles so i'm not in too much of a hurray to rush it off to a main dealer until i've had a go at fixing it.

Engine 320CDI Shut off valve

Hi it was not the shut off valve . There is a sensor on the crankshaft which when you stop the engine the sensor tells the shut off valve to switch the diesel off then as soon as you turn the key and the engine starts to turn the sensor should then tell the shut off valve to switch the diesel back on and the engine should start, in my case it was the sensor which was faulty bought a new one from CES which are a lot cheaper than mercedes we changed the sensor which is on top of the flywheel underneath the heater exchange (which you have to take off to get to the sensor) it is a bit awkward in our case the sensor was siezed solid but after a lot of patients we had to very carefully drill it out put the new sensor in and had no problems ever since "touch wood", If yours sensor is free it should come straight out. If you have any problems please get back in touch. If you have any problems you can contact me on 01948710866 and I will talk you throught it Cheer Paul

Engine 320CDI Shut off valve

Hi sorry I do not have any pictures.
It is located on the passanger side of the car.It is positioned at the right hand side of the gearbox bell housing with the bonnet open you can look down on the back of the engine with a torch you can see the gearbox bell housing and you can see the black connecting wire which is on top of the sensor the sensor itself is approx 2 inches long which goes into the bell housing which of course you cannot see.On the fly wheel there is a tab which will stop everytime TDC at the sensor hope this is of some help. Paul
