My wife's W169 180 cdi has now covered over 80,000 miles and I've noticed that it doesn't run smoothly at times. My local garage suggests I put an additive in with the diesel to give the injectors a clean. Any thoughts or experience as to how good or otherwise are these cleaners ??

Couple of years ago when I got my current 250cdi it was running rough. After few full tanks of V-Power it started running smooth and since then that’s the only fuel she gets.
The same I did with my Mrs Corsa and now Mini (both petrols). Mini’s idling revs were all over the place. After 2nd fill it’s steady and smooth.
You’ll notice the difference after less than two tanks.

Millers ecomax.

Diesel fuel additives from Redex, Millers, Forte, BG, will all do the job.

Alternatively, you can wait till the tank is near empty then give it a couple of tankfuls of premium Diesel (Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate) to achieve the same result.

And don't forget the Italian tune-up ;)

After that, keep using the additive regularly but do not over-dose (or just use the occasional tankful of premium Diesel instead)

My reasoning is that we don’t know which chemical molecules are in the fuels we’re buying and that adding off the shelf additive to already treated fuel with some additives can lead to a chemical reaction between those two, so neither performs as intended.
My logic is that adding additives directly in a tank would make sense in case of using an untreated diesel or petrol.
And of course, another vote for Italian tune-up.

Agreed, I wouldn't add fuel additives to premium fuels........
