Engine code meaning

Hi I have a 2009 mercedes viano w639 2.2 150BHP engine code R646 980 I am looking to do engine swap due to having few issues oil leaking from few places and as has done 240000 miles .
Can anyone explain what the numbers mean (R646 980) and if and R646 engine be a straight plug an play engine so to speak or do I need to source an engine with the all the same numbers.

The engine code 646.980 is the code given to the exact engine fitted in your Viano.
If you do a swap, look for the same code and you should have no problems.
Different engine codes mean the engine was fitted to a different model and may not be compatible
