Hi All,
Here is a tale of my issue and the solution in case anyone else encounters something similar. My car's a 1998 SL320.
A couple of weeks ago my car stalled at a set of traffic lights and proved "difficult to restart", taking 3 turns of the ignition (am used to a first turn clean start). After that the car was perfect so thought nothing else about it.
Friday last week the same occurred again so i thought I'd do some research via here. Suggestions involved sensors (OVP seemed most likely). However Europarts weren't able to identify the part so more research was needed. Over the weekend a long (motorway) drive proved problem free.
Yesterday it occured 3 times, and this time was taking longer to restart, i.e. upto 3 mins of turning the ignition before the engine would get going.
So in desperation I booked it in to the MB garage for this morning.
However on the way it occured again, whilst driving
, but no joy at restarting. With the assistance of the AA I get to the garage where they diagnosed the problem:
Crankshaft position sensor for ignition sensor.
The fix was to replace the sender unit, and a control unit recode.

Part £54, Labour £111!
Hope this may be of use to others. If you need more details let me know.
As an aside the garage were great - with wireless network I was able to work, drink coffee whilst the car was fixed :bannana:
