Any advice to help solve my problem would be gratefully received!

On my way home from work today the engine diagnostic light illuminated on the dashboard.

My SLK is a 200k, 2001 model, manual gearbox with 81,000 miles. I have never had any problems with it during my 4 years of ownership until now.

I have contacted my local independent garage who have advised that the car needs to be hooked up to diagnostic equipment which should then diagnose the fault. Being an independent garage, they aren't sure if their equipment will diagnose the fault on an SLK, and if it doesn't, then they say the only way to identify the fault is through Mercedes (ouch, i'm sure will be very expensive!)

Does anybody have any ideas as to what the fault may be prior to paying for a diagnostic check?

All responses gratefully received.

Alex.

if you want guesses,

#1 oil in the wiring from the camshaft magnet, causing damage to the o2 sensor.
#2 air mass sensor covered in oil or just u/s
#3 any one of a hundred other things!

if you get the fault codes read then make sure the garage gives you a copy of them, even if only hand written. then get back here for more advice.

Your car should have an OBD socket. I don't know the SLK, but the information I have shows it's position in image below.

This means any EOBD code reader should be able to read engine codes and depending on the code reader also display live data, either as figures or graphically. If they don't possess a code reader I would suggest finding a decent local independent Merc specialist.

Whereabouts are you in the world if you add it to your user details someone may be able to point you to a suitable indy.

A launch X531 will read some of the codes but trust me when I say that Star is the way to go. It has saved some of the people who have visited me a fortune.

i missed a guess out!

#4 sticking one way valve used for the secondary air injection. fault code p2036 (p0410). more likely than #2 and #3 above.
