Engine Jump Start Protocol

Hi everyone,

I need to jump start my Mercedes CLS (Battery is in the boot) with the assistance of another car.

According to the owners manual, it states that the black cable can be connected directly to my flat car's negative battery terminal.

However, from what I have read from other sources, they state that the black cable should be grounded on a non-painted metal surface that is away from the battery.

I was wondering what the correct protocol is and if indeed, the black cable should be grounded away from the battery, where the best place to do this is, given the battery is in the boot?

Many thanks in advance.

Ther’s usually jump start points u fee the bonnet, the Luce usually sits beneath a red plastic cap and the black lead connects to an Earth point nearby.

It doesn’t matter where you connect the black lead, it’s just in case it causes a spark.

You can go either way.
Its a safety measure as you want to avoid sparks near the battery - risk of explosion.
Sometimes its convenience as negative post may be hidden.
Most cars now have charging posts in bay.
Most important is the order of attachment and derachmenr.

Positive post is usually under a red plastic cover under the bonnet and often a longer pin/thread sticking out of the top of one of the front suspension struts is your negative.
