Hi all,

Got a bit of a b****r here. You may see an earlier thred about a gearbox problem, seems maybe not.

Anyway engine started missing (2003 C200k with 85k on it) on tues (as in straight away) having done 400 or so totally smooth miles on the previous couple of days. You can feel it when driving around at 30mph, its much more noticable at 70 on the mway. If you floor it, theres plenty of power, its just a bit 'jerky' as it were. Which initially led the local indy to suspect glycol in the gearbox. Anyway, their head mechanic was not totally convinced and had a good look around and remains convinced its engine not gearbox. Overall they were looking for 1.5 days or so.

Plugs..OK
leads..OK
fuel filter..OK (also drained a bit of fuel off incase that was poor)

Laptop (star tester I guess) did indicate something 'going on' with cyl2 (no fault code as such so no idea what this actually means). So they swapped electrical components between 1 and 2, and now cyl 3 shows something, but again, no fault code as such.

Any ideas, MAF seems to be a common thread, but, from what I can see mine is far too driveable for that..all other threads seem to talk about little or no power.

Injector...

Any help much appreciated
Thanks
jon

I could only suggest a MAF, my E280 V6 showed similar symptoms a while back which I half ignored. Totally died on me about a week ago, stuck a new MAF in and it runs like a dream once again!!!

I to had a misfire fault code on STAR but didn't show MAF failure!

Maf does sound possible. I had one go on my last c class and it went from hiccuping and misfiring to one going forward at 5mph!

I doubt it will be the maf then. (a black top is a 271 engine)

There is a breather pipe under the air filter that splits than can cause irregular running.

My firt port of call would be a compression test.

Thanks, whats the significance of a 271 engine?? I guess I should have said that its black with a metallic strip running along its length

The 271 has different problems to the other Kompressor engines. (111).

You really need it diagnosed properly but a garage that knows these engines well.

I guess its off to MB then....

No, Just a decent specialist.

There are several known problems with that engine.

Burnt exhaust valves
Oil migration in the engine wiring loom
Crankcase breather hose

You got to get a garage that knows what they are looking for as Ollie says.

Okee dokee, anybody know a specialist in the west midlands who knows these engines well?

Hmm keep coming back to it being fine for 150 miles on mon night, but bad straight away on tues morning, surely most of the things described, valves, breathers etc would be more 'progressive'?

A hose or the PCV valve could fail/leak/collapse suddenly leading to knock on effects. Your last 150 miles ( motorway??) with some sort of problem might have been enough? Were there any traces of oil contamination inside the inlet manifold/ MAFF area?

Yes last 150 miles were all motorway, dont know if there was any oil around, didn't look myself. btw, whats a PCV valve?

Ahhh, sorted, the reason it took so long to find is that it wasn't a a misfire afterall....low gearbox oil.

All sorted now.

Thanks Jay.

Glad it's sorted but did you find out where it was leaking from? The ATF shouldn't "used up" merely swirled around a bit :)

I can't see how a missfire can be caused by low atf level.
