I bought a mercades c220 sport cdi w204 a few weeks ago and the last couple of days ive been feeling and hearing a bad banging sound when i turn over the car and turn it off its like my gearbox is about to fall out its like banging/thudding under my drivers seats/middle of car ive had the car checked by a garage and they said gearbox mount is fine and other bits but they found that the right hand side engine mount as alot of play in easy to push up with a bar they said its 50/50 as thats all they can find could that effect the sound im hearing its like the exhaust when i start is hitting under the car but it isnt ...

Get both engine mounts replaced. Not too expensive and if bought from a dealer, go and have a word as they should be paying

Sadly i bought it private :( it's horrible it feels like the gearbox is shaking but it isn't lol im also getting like a vibration in the dash/passengers door

If you mean passenger side engine mount, then this is for some reason, the one that seems to perish.
Cheap and easy to replace.
Almost certainly that's your problem

If you open the bonnet and get a mate to blip the throttle, you will see the engine lift off the mounting if they are really bad.
You are probably looking at a £150 - £200 job including both mounts at your garage.

New mounts make a huge difference to how smooth the car is.

They said 200 to fit just one so i phoned them just & they said 300 fitted for both.

Thats a bit steep. It's not a difficult job on a W204.

If you supply the mounts (Lemforder not MB branded) the price could come down.

Get in touch with this guy ( a forum member) with all your details and you should save some money.

Ok thanks! how could that mount making a banging sound under my drivers seat/middle car could it be lifting my exhaust do you think hitting bottom of the car

Remember the exhaust is attached to an engine that is moving around every time you change gear, accelerate and brake.
It probably is the exhaust knocking the underside of the car as the engine moves.
Get the mounts done and it will be cured.

you'd think it would knock once driving etc it doesnt its only when i start my car and turn it off.

Then you are lucky. I've heard the exhaust bang the underside of a car every gearchange (not my car I add:D)

Don't overthink it Anthony. Just get the mounts replaced and you'll have a nice car again.

When starting and stopping the engine is probably the most vigorous movement.
Check the transmission mount as well. Made a huge difference on my 270cdi

Oh it's vigorous haha feels like my transmisson box is shaking! they have checked the gearbox mount mate its all good.

The other possibility is that the central rubber mount for the propshaft central bearing has gone allowing the propshaft to flail about. Sound location would indicate it may be this. HOWEVER violent engine movement due to worn mounts can be transmitted down the exhaust system causing it to strike the underbody further back altho the problem is further forward.

The right hand engine mounts got slight play when he lifted it up in the garage with a big bar it lifted easy but the left hand one was abit harder the the gap was closer the engine mount still needs replacing if it isn't that next step is what you said
