For those who always wanted to know or for those who knew but wanted to see it more visually this video I found quite good.

There's also "synthetic" and synthetic oils.

I prefer esther synthetic oils when available.

"Synthetic Technology" = Semi-synthetic.

For normal use all you need to know is the MB spec e.g 229.5 or 229.51.

The vast majority of oils marketed as fully synthetic are not even Mobil 1 isn't these days and MB's own oil certainly isn't otherwise it would be double the cost. But it doesn't matter if the oil meets the spec.

I can say with all honesty that decent oil made all the difference to my GTiR. - I don't know what the Mercedes specifications are without checking, but oil technology improves over the years.

Well most will use the Mercedes coded oil be it 229.5 or 229.51, the thing to remember if you are going to use semi-synthetic is don't, use synthetic, there is no british standards for semi, the manufactures can use as little or as much synthetic oil as they wish,it is a glaring loop hole that has never been closed.
