Hey all, new to this site and wanted to get some help. The timing chain on my W204 2012 C180 Coupe went and took it to the garage they are saying to straight engine swap it but it's going to cost £2,500 for the engine and another £2,000 on top for labour. I'm wondering how much would it cost for a full engine rebuild? As I can see the cogs that hold the timing chain have grinded abit but the chain is still intact (hasn't snapped).

Out of interest does yours have the M274 engine or the 271? The problem with an overall will be whether there are bent con-rods and damaged pistons as well as damaged valves. It takes a specialist to deal with bent rods!

The timing gear failure is a common issue on the M271 engine.
If opting for a replacement engine... make sure it had the chain (and sprockets, if need be) replaced or you'd risk ending-up in the same place again.

The Labour cost to swap engines seems high, how many hours are being quoted for?

Yeah I will get that replaced if I go down the replacement engine route. Would just like to see the options I have before I go down that road
That's what I thought for a engine swap hence why I went looking for answers here lol, didn't say how many hours but will question that tomorrow, just gave me the price and that was it pretty vague to be honest.
Guy was telling me to even take the engine out to inspect the inside would cost me £500 (seems to me he doesn't want me to go down that route for some reason) Anyone know of any good garages or specialist that do it for a good price?

Your probably correct some garages over price so they DON'T get the job 
because they dont want it,me personally would remove the head and have it inspected before i go with complete engine swop where did they get £2500 for the engine from ?

£3500 for a low mileage parts car same as yours on ebay if you have time and space to part it out.

, the guy said I won't be able to get "just" any C180 coupe engine as the onboard engine management system is different and won't work but I'm not sure that't the case? anyway I will check out the engines you looked up for me.
