Avoid the eBay kits for timing gear & chain. m271.com are recommended by a few on here for their kits and they are based in Camberley :)

Myself and another indie has had a problem with their chain kits, both had stretched chains after a few 000 miles?? . Maybe a bad batch but will only fit an oe chain now.

MB & other brands had policy of buying Made in China at one time.
So check its a genuine EWIS brand and of course carbon particles in the oil especially on diesels will scour the the chain pins and bushing links causing premature excess wear/timing drift .
Regular servicing is essential.

Having worked on Mercedes for over 25 years, we know most of the shortfall of owning one.

Quick update, told the local garage to take the head of and check to see what the damage is and they want £800 for it. Regal can't pick up my car until next week but I don't want my car to be sitting around so I guess paying the £800 is the only option even though I think that's pretty steep......🤔

£800 just to remove the head is very steep id hate to work that out at an hourly rate 🙄 2hrs max

My thoughts exactly. Ditto 2hrs work to take head off and assess.

Yeah it is steep, what would be a good price to remove the head and get assessed?

On its own 2x £70 plus vat if just a strip and assess but we would not charge separately if doing whole job. Gives you a guide.

If they charge £60 ph say 3hrs that gives them about an hour to inspect which could be done in 15 mins real time

£800 means either 1. they don't want the job and they're telling you to "go away" or 2. they don't know what they are doing. Neither of these scenarios will end well. You should get the car moved to a Mercedes specialist who will have seen this problem before and will repair in the most economic way. If it means getting the car moved 30 or more miles away so be it - it will be more cost effective in the long run. Don't waste your time with a "reconditioned" engine.

SMS do you do recovery's?

Agreed, no point in fitting another engine, they all have the same flaw and the donor engine will have the same fault at some point, unless "rebuilt"

Head off, chain replace, valves replaced, new gears/tensioner - Last one we did was approx. £1700 all in with skim and service.

Hey Alex, where are you guys located?

Hi,
Have you gotton a quote from Knights yet, seems getting it recovered to SMS and getting them to inspect it may be a lot cheaper than leaving it where it is. Once inspected you can plan your next move.

Steve.

A lot of places simply don't want to do jobs like this and give the customer a FO price.
Would be a lot easier to just explain they are not wanting the job.

Friends garage recently had a non running Transit (I know the owner through a friend) in for repair.
After garage diagnosed it found it had jumped timing chain.

They told customer it is not a job for them and advised replacement engine locally at another garage for around £2300 plus labour.

Customer went with a repair at a totally different garage to save money and is £2k in but engine doesn't run right.

Advice is to get a specialist that knows the vehicle and what they are doing. ;)

A transit has the same hydrolic tensioner system as the MB in this case
