Engine rebuild

Most indys tend to avoid jobs like these because they can sink in hours of diagnostic work trying to get to the root of the problem and come out none the wiser; again a money pit for them especially if the customer turns around and says wait a minute you've charged me £hundreds and its still not fixed? Find your nearest reputable MB specialist and go from there, plenty that are recommended on the forum :-)

How could you possibly sink hours into diagnostic of a head the root of the problem is the chain, guides, tensioner and possibly all the valves and if they then come out none the wiser then i wouldn't trust them with my wheely bin🤣

I'm not sure if you come from a mechanical background, but in an ideal world the above would be true. However we don't live in an ideal world and issues will crop up from time to time :-) Compounded by previous experiences from customers who have unrealistic expectations and possibly a lack of specialist experience in a particular engine, you could understand an indys reluctance to undertake the job.

Yes i do come from a mechanical and engineering background, i do agree with the bulls--t quotes for work not wanted. its not really a specialist job to remove the head come on a 1st year student could do that the hardest part of the job is the chain and guides skim the head regrind new valves in and rebuild the head new stetch bolts there done ( in layman's terms )

Im not trying to pick an argument with anyone i just can't stand the thought of anyone getting ripped off some people see an expensive car and just think of £££🤔

Hey guys, no need to get all up in each others business, we are all trying to help each other out and do the best we can for one another and I thank everyone in helping me get the best outcome possible 😅 we are in it together

Will the head need skimming ? If it's just a couple of valves hitting the piston crown then these need replacing, new chain, tensioner and gears.
Is it such a big job ?

Take some of those camshafts fitted to a Transit, looks like solid cast.
They are tubular steel with pressed lobes which can move if they come into contact with valves.

Can be very difficult for even an experienced technician to get to the bottom of.

Always skim the head imo

I didn't think you were picking an argument, its all good :) Do you have an update for us Dan?

I was going to ask about the head skimming thing , what is the theory behind this ? I rebuilt a V6 with 23 out of 24 valves bent after a cam belt failure . Put it back together without skimming the heads. Is it something this engine in particular benefits from ?

I always skim the heads as ive got my own skimming machine plus i was taught that way 😁

Is it done as a matter of course or do the heads warp with cam chain failure ?

I do it as a matter of course heads only warp imo if head gasket fails and the car overheats

Rebuilt an Hillman Imp engine that had overheated, getting that head skimmed was a must , other than that I can't see the point if the head is showing no signs of damage , but if it's cheap and easy to do in house , why not.

The only heads i've skimmed are from the crappy Rover 214 K series engine, well known for overheating and warping of the heads, fairly easy to strip down though.

Hey guys, a quick update the engine has extreme damage (asking for the details on what kind of extreme damage it is in) but the garage said from experience to stop the engine management light from turning on to replace old with new VVC units inlet and exhaust but that will be an extra £250, no labour cost though for that.

Dan , we are going to need a bit more info on the 'Extreme damage' thing, to some extreme damage is a rod through the engine block or a snapped camshaft with all valves bent. To others that's just another day at the office. I hope its not too bad.:thumb:
