Engine trays

E320 cdi passed its MOT but had a oil leak as a caution, I`ve not noticed any major drips on the garage floor, so I removed the trays and sure enough the tray under the sump was filthy. Howevermost of the oil on the sump appeared to be old, so I cleaned off majority of the oil and ran the engine couldn`t see any leaks.

I have also cleaned the majority of the gunk and oil residue from the tray, but what the heck are those different shaped cubes all about, strangely enough though when I put it all back I had some large drips of oil come from a hole in the tray.

I`m thinking that maybe some careless oil changes plus rain have been storing up in those strange cubes [some have tears in them] I will check again in a few days given the time.
Anybody got any ideas, as I have checked the search function and nothing seems to stand out when I cleaned where I thought it may have a leak?
Cheers Pete.

Further to my last post, it does indeed appear that I have a leak but locating it has been a little bit of a mare.
At the moment the place where the highest point of origin appears to be on the bottom R/H bolt [looking upwards and forward from underneath] of the oil cooler, looks like a pain if I have to get at it to renew gasket.
Anyhow I changed the oil seeing It was just about due an I have shoved a rag where I think the problem is.
Has anyone removed the oil cooler and what sort of a job am I in for?

Another update, checked when I got home this morning and there was no oil dripping down to the sump area, however it does appear the rag I stuffed into the oil cooler area has soaked up any oil that has leaked.
So I now have to plan in a gasket change, grateful for any advice or hasn`t anybody done one of these yet?:dk:

Is there anyone out there that has done the gasket between oil filter housing and the oil cooler/heat exchanger on a e320 cdi?
Or will I be the first to undertake this job?

I have done this on a petrol W112 engine, make sure you order the correct seals/ gasket ans don't overtighten the bolt as the casing is only aly.

Richard

Hi rpe2, are you sure it would be a similar job? I googled w112 and it came up with a classic Merc from the 60`s

Are they not used to absorb noise from the engine?
As far as I know the two functions of the engine tray is to keep dirt out & noise in.

Russ
Funny you should say that about keeping the noise in, because it was a lot quieter inside the car when the sump panel was removed and I`m sure mpg went up by about 2 mpg on my commuter run.

OK thanks, I did look up the gasket, but it looks like the inlet manifold may have to come off to get good access as it appears to be just too complicated to just blindly fit.

Thinking about this again, are you sure that the leak is coming from the gasket? If it has had a filter change recently, it may be that the mechanic didn't oil the seal. You may wish to try fitting and oiling a new seal on the filter cap before getting further involved. Removing the manifold is not a nice job on the CDI engines.

Richard

Thanks for your reply Richard, but it all seems pretty good around the filter and I just did the oil change.
When I was looking for the leak I could only find oil on the bottom right hand bolt looking to the front.
However its worth another look as I`m just about to set off for Cardiff and I am doing the water checks etc..

Cheers Pete.:thumb:
